An experience in criminal court
I had to attend a preliminary court hearing today here in East. TN. It was very educational since I have ever rarely gone to court.

I wore some nice clothes because it seemed to me that's what one should do. I was surprised at the people who came in wearing street clothes and some of them looked like they'd just fallen out of bed.

What impressed me the most was the judge. He took time with every case, engaged every person no matter which side they were on and appeared to be very fair and lenient when required.

Overall, it was a good experience.

1. That's weird
In my experience, judge, da's and defense attorneys are a jokey in-club who chuckle together as they bilk you for all your money. Fuck them all.

2. Some are serious public servants. Some are shitheads.
In about the same proportion as the general population. Like cops.

4. Good for you
Yes, the system is populated with competent, caring people, and, yes, it's pretty strange how people dress for court. I am always surprised, but, you know, I think a lot of them either don't know any better or don't have better clothes.

Or, as someone suggested, going to court is like going to IHOP for them.

I'm glad you had such a positive and impressive experience. The majority of courts in which I've worked have been unfailingly professional and fair.

Good for you. I hope you're not a defendant.

5. Not a defendent, thankfully, but still had to be there
It was a positive experience for me and the people on both sides seemed very professional and took their work seriously.

You are right...it's entirely possible they didn't have better clothes.
