1. Acceptance of the New York Liberal Party Nomination

What do our opponents mean when they apply to us the label "Liberal?" If by "Liberal" they mean, as they want people to believe, someone who is soft in his policies abroad, who is against local government, and who is unconcerned with the taxpayer's dollar, then the record of this party and its members demonstrate that we are not that kind of "Liberal." But if by a "Liberal" they mean someone who looks ahead and not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people -- their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights, and their civil liberties -- someone who believes we can break through the stalemate and suspicions that grip us in our policies abroad, if that is what they mean by a "Liberal," then I'm proud to say I'm a "Liberal."

3. I was a liberal when I was a republican
These are so many of the ideals I believed in when I considered myself a republican.

4. There's Liberal and then there's ...
Radically Liberal - as in setting out with your neighbors in the mid 1770's and shooting British Soldiers.....as opposed to the conservative position of the day; "Stay the Course with the King"....

5. Well John Kenneth Galbraith wrote about The Annals of an Abiding Liberal
Edited on Thu Jun-23-05 08:38 PM by EVDebs
and JFK ordered all Galbraith's cables from India, where JKG was ambassador, to be routed to him so he could read the language...Galbraith's great command of the English language and his catch phrases, were excellent !

"Liberalism is, I think, resurgent. One reason is that more and more people are so painfully aware of the alternative."--
John Kenneth Galbraith

"Liberalism is trust of the people tempered by prudence. Conservatism is distrust of the people tempered by fear."--
William E. Gladstone
