Durbin's comments help the enemy immensely
and that the mentality i have to deal with with repugs... OK so i came back with
what i don't understand is that the republicans say that what one senator says "helps the enemy immensely" yet ignore the fact that THOUSANDS of innocent lives are being taken over there and that might be helping the enemy's
that after years at war the people of Iraq still don't have enough electricity, water or jobs and THAT is helping the enemy (but are OK for contractors to be over there )
when bush said "we are on a crusade" THAT could have helped our enemy's
and that the pictures coming out of abu could have helped the enemy...
so I'm sorry... one guy making a comment that he has now said he regrets isn't making my radar screen as a big issue. esp. since bush and crew has not said it regarding most of these things

so what else have the repugs done to "help the enemy immensely"

2. Lie, lie, lie, lie, lie and destroy its country of its treasures in both
people and artifacts.

Bush needs to learn he isn't the Almighty and the crusades ended abysmally 2000 years ago. His cry for freedom is a bit late after he lied so forcefully that half the people in this country believed him enough to vote for him for a second term...maybe they did. History might prove that wrong, too.

5. If You Do...Make Sure You've Got Cover
The letdown here is how fast Democrats went running from Durbin when he made those statements.

Let me ask you, how would you describe Gitmo? Club Med, like Duncan Hunter? It's a Prisoner of War camp...even worse, it's one that operates outside of both U.S. and International law. This is what Senator Durbin was pointing to...and, as you wisely note, the corporate media picked up on the Nazi reference (I rarely hear anyone bitch about the Gulag...and more appropriate) and used it to beat Durbin up with.

Durbin failed to gauge the outrage in both Democrats and Repugnicans. He had the Repugnicans figured better...he knew there'd be a firestorm with such rhetoric...and maybe that would further the discussion on closing this abhorant prison. However, no other Democrats came out and spoke out with him...leaving him to hang for several days as the talk shows and hate radio kept the drumbeat going.

I regret he appologized...and now, the way he did it. While he didn't appologize for what he said...only to those who were uncomfortable in what he said, but doing so he came off weak to both Democrats and Repugnicans. Yep, he failed.

Gitmo won't go away, and my hopes are that when this sorid episode of American history is written, Durbin's remarks will be noted as one of the turning points and voice of reason in a time of total greed and madness.

7. I Agree...He Miscalculated
That "Kick Me" was put on his by Democrats as much as the corporate media.

When no other Democrat came out and stood with him to clarify his statement, that "Kick Me" sign was tatooed on him. When Biden and Pelosi called for him to back down...despite Hostetler making a similar reference about Democrats that very day in the House...this is what forced the apology.

Being Jewish, I'm sensitive to remarks about Nazis and the Soviets. I don't like when Nazi references are bantered around in a peace-meal fashion...however, in this case there was a valid point and reason for the reference. Sadly, this point hasn't been made at all and our international reputation continues to disolve the longer Gitmo and other facilities of this type remain in operation.

Peace
