Great web site for State specific living will documents.
Info on a web site that provides FREE State specific living will and durable power of attorney documents was published in the new AARP magazine. The beginning of the article relates a story of a guy whose family disagrees about end-of-kife care, and the question "How can he be sure he won't be the next Terri Schiavo?"

I know I didn't want to pay some attorney to draw up one of these at a cost of $1,000+ and I thought some of you might be interested in finding this information free too.

It's at a web site for Caring Connections
www.caringinfo.org

Just click on the button that says Advance Directives in the upper right of the page, fill in your info, and you'll get free access to the information required by your State, including instructions aand required forms.

3. I tried to find the AARP article on line and can't, so...
here's a few of the hints they have listed.

* Make a Record. Write down in clear language exactly what kinds of medical treatment you want or don't want, so there's no room for misinterpretation. Many living wills use the term "Life-support treatments" without detail. Life support could include everything from a respirator to artifical nutrition and hydration. "Be spefic!" A living will should also specify whether or not you would like to receive pain medication.

* Appoint a Guardian Angle. You'll need a healath-care agent, who will be legally responsible for carrying out your wishes. Choose a family member or friend you trust, as well as a backup in case your first choice diess before you do. Make sure the people you choose are well informed about your wishes and are strong-willed enough to carry them out in the face of opposition.

* Speak up. Discuss your wishees with your family and close friends and give them and hour health care agent copies of your living will. That way they know you have thought about this lucidly, in advance of any physical or mental decline.

I've already printed mine, and am filling in the details today! You ALL need to think about this too! Like Andy said, I don't want Bill Frist to make any decisions for ME!
