The mystery of the GREATEST page
Edited on Fri Jun-24-05 09:33 AM by paineinthearse
I continue to ponder the workings of DU and have a personal question.

Some posts go like gangbusters, with each new response they to to the top of their respective forums. When interest wanes, they fall off the forum's first page and get less attention. Fine, that is the way Elad's software works, it is democratic and I have no problem with that.

But a couple months back, the admins introduced the GREATEST page feature, where we peer nominate, first by 2 votes, now by 3, those posts which we think deserve greater attention. Whatever the source of the post, all with 3 votes get copied to the GREATEST page.

Now the question. I can cite many examples but will use this
as this is current - http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x1880518

How can a post that was going like gangbusters and has 6 votes not get any responses for over 8 hours? It appears that when a post is not on the front page of a forum, it does not get reads AND people, IN GENERAL, are not reading the GREATEST page.

A few weeks back I made a similar post and found that many were unaware of the GREATEST page. What can we do to encourage more to occasionally visit the GREATEST page?

3. This is made with the same intent as the admin's message announcing
how the greatest page works. By the logic, there is no need for continuing education programs, either.

Sorry if my reminder offends.

2. I visit the greatest page several times a day.
It always check it first thing in the morning to see if anything interesting has transpired over night. I don't know why you assume that people "in general" to not refer to the greatest page. I have nominated a thread while not posting to it because I have felt that I had nothing to contribute as far as a discussion is concerned.

4. Most of the time I nominate something w/o posting
If it's good enough for the "Greatest" page, it usually doesn't need any extra from me!

5. Most days I am away from DU for 12 - 15 hours
so I read LBN, Editorials and the Greatest Page.

Since I get to threads later, and am on limited time, I tend to read rather than post. I am thankful for that quick shortcut to find notable stories (or at least items that other DUers find notable.)
