Community-based (anecdotal) evidence of a "booming economy" |
|
Several of my neighbors do construction (mostly home stuff) and are laid off and have been for awhile. So the housing market around here may still be moving (though there remain a whole kit if foreclosures) - not so many folks are spending money on home repair/remodeling and other projects. This is the second summer time slow down in that sector, in central Indiana, out of three summers (2003, and now 2005).
Other anecdotal evidence on how that "booming economy" is trickling down in your community?

1. I know 2 people (not related) who work full time and are in bankruptcy |
|
and I know 2 others (not related to the first) that after rent and childcare, use the food bank regularly.
No jobs is bad enough, but the real problem is low wage jobs.

2. a friends retail businees (in business for a number of years) |
|
tanked with the recession - and never rebound. She tried bankruptcy to salvage the business - but that wasn't enough. Seems the only folks in town spending lots of money were those with big, big tax cuts.. and they were buying things like mink coats and luxury cars... haven't done much for local retailers.
And, I have never seen so many empty stores in the local mall. More closing than there are new one's coming in. And only one store left that is locally owned.
