The Irresistable Political methods of Dr. Howard Dean
Un-capture the Flag
Back when Howard Dean announced he was running on June 23, 2003, took an American flag on a pole and planted in the middle of the stage and said:
we, like all Americans, love our country and want to see her flag stand for freedom and justice for all. And that flag is not the property of the either party, that flag belongs to every single American.

It was a strong moment and one that made many people see some potential. Some of the other candidates echoed Dean's remarks but they lacked the power and the passion. But they were right to see Dean had something that few others did. And they were right to want it.

Dean closed his campaign with a more detailed version of the same line:

You have the power to take back the flag of the United States of America, so that it does no longer belong solely to Jerry Falwell and Rush Limbaugh and Dick Cheney and John Ashcroft...

(BTW, if you re-read this speech you will see why the media only showed the scream): http://www.crocuta.net/Dean/Transcript_of_Notorious_Iowa_Speech_Jan19_2004.htm

Orange
Orange hats provided high visibility to Dean supporters in Iowa. It is a color that stands out from the clutter. It is obvious to third parties that the person wearing that color is not simply doing so out of coincidence. It is a simple, unmistakable message.

It was irresistable to those who understand the value of good political methods. It was copied in the Ukraine.

More - Blogging, internet fund raising, etc.
Dean's blogging and internet-based organizing and fund raising are still unmatched on the Right. Now unsolicited donations retaliate for attacks on Dean.

Dean's supporters were called 'wild eyed' by the GOP. But they proved to be irresistable to Republican Brett Schundler:

And most recently, they tried quoting Dean out of context. There has been debate about whether Dean's comments defining the GOP were ultimately good or bad for our side. But 2 weeks later, Karl Rove the former master becomes the student. Rove uses an inflammatory statement to get the MSM echo chamber to give him ink. Dean's methods are irresistable.

1. I'd love to hear Dean, while on TV, ask Karl why he's playing copy cat?
Wouldn't that be a great way to turn the tables on good old Karl? I'm positive he doesn't ever want to be called "Dean lite"!

3. I believe that is a myth
What numbers are you looking at? Here are mine:

In fact, Dean raised $14.8 million between February and April 2005 (the latest data available), compared with the DNC's $8.5 million during that period in 2003, the previous non-election year, and compared with the DNC's $13.7 million in so-called "hard money" raised in the first six months of 2001. (It should be noted that since 2001, the contribution limits to national parties have increased as a result of the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act.)

Moreover, the DNC has raised more in comparison to the RNC over the past three months than it did during 2003. The RNC raised $32.4 million between February and April, about 2.2 times the rate of the Democrats, as Media Matters for America noted; over the same period in 2003, the RNC raised $25.7 million, more than three times the rate of the DNC. Media Matters compiled statistics from February through April, rather than the first-quarter statistics that BusinessWeek used, because Dean did not assume leadership of the DNC until February 12.

In addition, Crowley's comparison of the parties' cash-on-hand totals distorted the current state of Democratic party finances. She failed to note that the "$7.2 million for the Democrats" is nearly double the $3.9 million the DNC had on hand at the end of the first quarter of 2003.

If Dean wasn't effective the GOP wouldn't be putting these lies out. They are trying to separate the base of motivated Democrats from an effective leader with their stream of lies.
