For the first time, US acknowledges torture at Gitmo, Iraq, Afghanistan
Edited on Fri Jun-24-05 10:53 AM by wicket
http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/afp/20050624/pl_afp/unustortureguantanamo_050624132300

Washington has for the first time acknowledged to the United Nations that prisoners have been tortured at US detention centres in Guantanamo Bay, as well as Afghanistan and Iraq, a UN source said.

The acknowledgement was made in a report submitted to the UN Committee against Torture, said a member of the ten-person panel, speaking on on condition of anonymity.

"They are no longer trying to duck this, and have respected their obligation to inform the UN," the Committee member told AFP. "They they will have to explain themselves (to the Committee). Nothing should be kept in the dark."

UN sources said it was the first time the world body has received such a frank statement on torture from US authorities.

3. So they'll tell the foreigners, in confidentiality, but not us.
But then again, we are just citizens, and if they inform us, why, we might not support Social Security reform.

5. And did the psychiatrists and psychologists
mentioned the New York Times story today (from the New England Journal of Medicine article of Wednesday) help with this torture?

I think they did.

I think they should go to the Hauge.

8. You have to login first.
I signed up for an account a long time ago and now only use it to rate these stories. They are terrible spammers. Unless you have pretty good security on your computer, you might want to skip this one.

9. I wonder if the forthcoming photos and videos of torture have
anything to do with this admission? Maybe they are just hoping to keep it away from the American people, but admit it to the rest of the world. I'm sure that will improve our image in the eyes of other nations. :sarcasm:

11. That's got to be the only reason they are admitting it now! Because when
the latest batch comes out, there will be no right-minded moral person that could call it "fraternity pranks"....

This administration makes me sick....as well as the rest of the world...

Wonder if the Bush administration and certain GOP Members of Congress and the Senate are going to try to still attack and claim that groups like Amnesty Int'l have no credibility and are out of line for stating that the US is at the top of the list for human rights violations? Hmmmm....wonder who is going to look more credible when these photos come out? :eyes:

12. PS: Isn't it a cruel irony that on the same YahooNews story, that one
headline reads "Cheney says Guantanomo Bay Prisoners are well fed"...

Sick...I guess that as long as we feed them well, we can torture the hell out of them and its okay?

15. The same exact thing happened with the Koran Newsweek story.
Days AFTER Newsweek retracted the story, the TRUTH came out about what soldiers were doing to the Koran.

The arrogance of these people is breathtaking. Lie, lie, lie about an issue and after the person who made the initial claim apologizes...they admit it's TRUE! :wtf:

16. You wimpy Dems just don't understand
Edited on Fri Jun-24-05 11:45 AM by AnnInLa
the torture was NECESSARY to save American lives. EVERYTHING CHANGED AFTER 9/11....anything goes in the War on Terra, or else we will be fighting them over here. John Wayne WOULD APPROVE of torture in these critical and dangerous times. This is a DIFFERENT kind of war with DIFFERENT, but NECESSARY rules.

If that report is true, the above is the macho approach the repukes will use, and contrast us as wimpy, soft-on-terra Dems. It WILL appeal to the sheeple, hide and watch. Everything being done by the repukes lately is to return the country's sheeple to those good-old-days when they admired GWB for being strong on terra, and looked to the repukes for protection here at home.

The only issue * has going for him is the war-on-terra, so everything will be related to terra from now on, this makes the sheeple fearful again, and draws their attention away from domestic issues. Sigh.

19. Did you hear Al today talking about Bolton? Cannot remember
guest's name. They had another good theory about why they are hiding the documents Congress requests to confirm Bolton. His opinion was that the documents would confirm that Bolton was spying on his peers and that Cheney was somehow involved. Not a smoking gun, per se, but that it would be embarrassing. I'd think our media is complicit in covering up for them so why do they care?
