Poll question: What is the greatest threat to the USA? |
|
No one say other - bush or anyone like that. He's gone in three years. These issues will remain. I've tried to only include external threats. I hope I haven't forgotten any big ones.

28. Yep, that is the festering nest of despair. |
|
I do not believe that people who hear voices and talk to imaginary friends should be in leadership positions. Especially those which control nuclear weapons.

8. This is the hardest to deside poll I've ever seen on DU. VERY interesting |
|
There will be not be a "correct" answer, just the answer that gets the most votes. I wish people were putting more comments about their vote.
I put oil/energy, but I'm still not sure that's right. That is part of the problem. With no real media coverage on various topics, it is hard to be really informed on lots of things - in order to know just how bad off we are.

I asked without knowing which one I would even pick! The top 3 vote getters would be my top 3. If you put a gun to my head, I would have to say oil.

12. Illegal immigration and outsourcing.. |
|
Both of these factor into a depressed job market and stagnant wages. White collar positions are being outsourced while traditionally middle class blue collar jobs are being taken by illegals.

education and prison systems among other programs. Our health care system is not in nearly the crisis it is without illegals.

15. Where is political corruption? |
|
Frankly, none of those problems can be solved in government without significantly changing the campaign finance system. It simply does not benefit either party to do so, so as an issue it gets shelved again and again.
All the other issues are window dressing.

22. Yes, that is a problem |
|
but I was limiting it to external threats. In other words, things that we should all be able to agree (dems and repubs) that we want to take action on. Things that don't inherently devolve into partisan bickering right out of the box.

Without honest elections, all of the other problems will never be addressed because the repukes will continue to control the agenda.

19. But in this instance the democrats have the dubious honor... |
|
...of being the second most evil party. A few stand out as real reformers, but most are happy to fatten their campaign accounts and retire with millions of dollars of what essentially amount to bribes.

There are a lot of Democrats who take corporate and labor money in ridiculous sums. Besides, being less corrupt is not what I am looking for in my leaders.

18. But external threats are not the biggest threats- and not for the reasons |
|
that you're thinking.
It's just the media.
A free, independent, for the most part uncorrupted media is essential to our democracy.
We've totally lost that. That's the biggest threat to our country.

26. The biggest threat to America? America itself. |
|
This country (the government and the people) have made most of their own problems. Debt and deficit? Put that down to lack of fiscal discipline, on the part of the government (trillions in military spending, for a "war on terrorism" that can't be won, in a vain attempt to turn the tide of history and keep this failing and declining nation on top) and the people (most of whom live beyond their means, on credit, squandering money on things they don't need that advertising and social pressures make them want).
Energy crisis? Lack of any serious rail transport or public transit infrastructure, and a shortsighted misallocation of government transportation funds to highway building instead of expanding rail and othr mass transit networks, and a selfish and greedy insistence on the part of most Americans on owning a car or three, using massive amounts of energy in running air conditioning 24/7 during the summer and heat 24/7 in the winter, and so on.
Global warming? See previous paragraph.
Terrorism? Rogue nations? The US is a rogue nation, has been for a while now. (Violations of international law in waging illegal war in Iraq, disregard of treaties such as the Geneva Convention, et cetera). And as to terrorism, well, that's blowback from decades of US interference in and manipulation of other nations...the US government, under the aegis of the CIA, has done things as bad as any of the terrorists. Assassinations, toppling of democratically elected governments, running cocaine and heroin (and selling them to Americans) to finance their activities...and we don't expect some sort of reaction?
We have met the enemy, and he is us.
