One little moment. The news anchor of our local morning news show
Edited on Sat Jun-25-05 10:38 AM by BleedingHeartPatriot
began a report,by saying "The president will give an important national speech on Tuesday night" and then corrected himself and said "what the president says is an important speech".

I loved that moment. A moment in time when a media person didn't just spew, unchecked, the drivel coming from the WH.

For a moment, an acknowlegement that, just because they say it is, doesn't make it so.

Here's hoping for many, many more of those little moments.

8. You might want to delete this identifying information,
it could be used against him.
We want to keep the comments coming as long as we can. :hi:

edited to add: he didn't OVER emphasize the word "says", just enough to identify that what he was reporting was the WH description of the speech, not his.

I would be surprised it this caused him a problem. The show is by far the number one morning news show in Denver, and he has been a true "anchor".

No matter how many times other personnel on the show change, Shapiro keeps the perfect tone, and people watch in droves.

12. Yes, I'm serious.
RWers have been known to get people fired for stuff like that.

14. Can I just ask what "stuff like that" actually is? He clarified that the
description of the speech as "important" was from the WH, not their newsdesk.

Seems harmless enough. MKJ :7

18. Dissent.
Don't get me wrong; I'm not against speaking out, but the anchor is well-placed to reach a lot of people.
We need all the plain-talking we can get. :)

19. No, I'm pointing out that if someone is speaking out,
we might not want to accidentally jeopardize his job, so that he can continue to "sow" some discontent. :)

20. Well ratings are what they are after in the business... and he is
apparently getting them. With the publication, he should get even better ones. I say the opposite is true.

7 votes...should give details

1 vote...I shouldn't reveal the anchor's identity.:hi:

I hope that this moment occurs more and more.

It's called "reporting" not "repeating".

26. Actually, even though CO was "red" (barely), the Denver metro area
Edited on Sat Jun-25-05 01:47 PM by BleedingHeartPatriot
is heavily blue.

Gary Shapiro is probably about as close to "beloved" by the Denver community as any other media person. Other anchors and/or reporters may be respected by the community, but he completely projects the everyman kind of attitude that people relate to.

A friend of mine was at Cirque de Soleil (sp?) a few years back, and sat in the same aisle as Gary Shapiro.

She said he was just as relaxed and amiable as he appears on the news.

She also talked about one of the male performers who was performing these intricate flips, twists and so forth, on a rope above the crowd.

Apparently, even though the performer was a short, thin man, he had an eye catching, large "package" that didn't appear to be restrained.
As he flipped and flopped, his package did the same, distracting my friend, and others near her.

She said they were laughing and commenting on this, and Gary just about fell apart, he was laughing so hard.

Well, that's my favorite (and only) Gary Shapiro story.

7. Sorry I omitted the details. Actually, Gary Shapiro is an interesting
anchor.

He's quite ordinary looking, and yet he projects smarts, a great sense of humor and an occasional touch of (probably healthy) cynicism.

I'm almost afraid to post this, because I like him, and if it turned out he was a repub, I'd be pretty disappointed.

We have a lot of intrepid Colorado DU'ers who pretty much know the inside scoop on most public figures in our state.

But, I sure liked what he did yesterday.

3. And you were there to see it.
Amazing isn't it, when the light bulb goes off for other people and you get to see it happen, right before your eyes.

Watch this guy in the future. He may be waking up more often.

getting up the nerve to drop little things into his newscast, seeing what he can get by with without being fired.
