On the eleventh day of September of 2001, I was on a American Warship at sea. When those attacks occured, I and my shipmates wanted to kill those responsible. If they surrendered quickly enough, I was willing to take them prisoner and see them hung after a fair trial, but they would have to be quick. We were in a shoot first and let the coroner answer the questions mood.
And so, we invaded Afghanistan. And I applauded. After all, the Taliban was supporting AlQueda and hiding the people responsible. I wished I could help more, but Afghanistan is land locked... not much need for sailors there.
Then the sideshow started.
"Invade Iraq" you said.
And I asked why.
"Weapons of Mass Destruction" was the answer.
But I had been involved in the blockade of Iraq for the past ten years. I knew that anything that looked like it could be used to manufacture WMD had been prevented from entering the country. I knew that any site in Iraq that looked like it could manufacture WMD was bombed. How could they still have any?

But Osama bin Laden had publicly denounced Saddam. They hated each other. Al Queda wanted to overthrow Saddam.
"Saddam is evil"
Well, you got me there. He is evil. But he's not a threat, not then, not now. Osama is a threat. While we're wasting time, treasure and troops getting Saddam out of power, Osama is still running free. Free to plan more attacks.
"Saddam could become a threat"
Sure. So could my pet dog. But I'm not going to shoot my dog because he might, someday, become rabid. No, I worry instead about things that are a threat NOW, not possible future threats. After I've dealt with all the NOW threats, I'll worry about the 'coulds'. NOW threats like Osama.
I can say more, but I've made my point.
Iraq is a sideshow. It's not related to the 'War on Terror Masters'. Your constant drumbeat claiming otherwise is a lie. And you know it. Your claim that I wanted to offer therapy to the terrorists is also a lie. Say so to my face again, and I will personally drag you down to the military cemetary at Fort Rosecrans, and ask you to repeat it in front of the honored dead. And if you lie there, I'll kick your ass, in front of the brave men and women who sacrificed all for thier country. Because I want to hear thier applause while I do so.
Mr. Rove, those of us who served aren't afraid to die for our country. But give them Something To Die For. Don't order them to thier deaths for a lie.
