Leveling with the American People - will he or won't he?

On Tuesday June 21, 2005, Senator Joseph Biden (D-MD) spoke before the Brookings Institute on issues surrounding the Iraq War. He called upon President Bush to "level with the American People". This Tuesday (June 28, 2005), with Fort Bragg, North Carolina as a back drop, President Bush is scheduled to appear during prime time and attempt to "level with the American People".

While I applaud Senator Biden's appeal to President Bush to "level with the American People" - I fear such leveling will be more spinning - beginning with the site of the prime time speech. Why Fort Bragg as a backdrop and not the East Room, the Rose Garden or the Oval office in the White House? It's a sure bet that cameras will be focusing on the "audience" of clapping and cheering Service men and women who are stationed at Fort Bragg. Who would then dare to criticize the President speech since doing so will surely result in being accused of not supporting the troops?

The date is also interesting - 3 days before the 4th of July Holiday, and on the heels of the House passage of the Flag Burning Amendment.

We will hear how the insurgents are in their last throes. I expect those words to have been carefully cut/paste and edited from last years statements which said the increase in insurgent activity were are sign of desperation. A time table for withdrawal - absurd. Exit plans - ridiculous. The remainder of the speech will be a meticulously woven web of spin.

What we won't hear is any "leveling with the American People".

We won't hear why President Bush ignored a briefing report entitled "Bin-Laden determined to Strike US".

We won't hear why there were "no plans" on Bush's desk to invade Iraq when the Downing Street memo indicates Bush was determined to strike Iraq months before the "product was rolled out".

We won't hear any leveling about fixing facts to fit an invasion scenario.

There will be no leveling regarding why no Weapons of Mass Destruction have been found in Iraq - despite the assertion by Secretary Rumsfeld that he knew exactly where the weapons were being stored.

There will be no accounting for the billions of dollars being given to Halliburton and it's subsidiaries under no-bid contracts, nor why they continue to be awarded contracts while being "investigated" for overcharges and other financial problems.

During the 2000 Presidential Debate between Bush and Gore - Bush stated he would give clear mission statements, with clear timelines and exit plans should the occasion arise where it was necessary to send in our troops. That was then, this is now - so don't expect to hear any clear mission statements, clear timelines, or any exit plans. There will be a cleverly worded (and hopefully not flubbed) statements saying such a thing as a time line or exit plan will result with the insurgents just waiting us out.

If you are hoping for some sign of Bush to take responsibility - forget it. Karl Rove and Dick Cheney have already lined up the Sunday talk shows and with scripts in hand they will be blaming "liberals", Democrats et al for Bush's low approval numbers. The pesky fact that Iraq is Bush's war doesn't mean a thing. That over 1,700 service men and women have died in Bush's war doesn't influence the polls at all. It's all them damn liberals and Democrats fault. So much for being a uniter.

To Senator Biden, I say, "Leveling with the American People is foreign to Bush. Leveling with the American People is one of his unknown unknowns. One speech is too little too late to undo 3 years and 3 months of manipulation of facts, spinning of the news and bald-faced lies surrounding the real reasons behind Invading Iraq."

6. actually,
he has NEVER levelled with the American people.

His life is a sham. His accomplishments are shams. His reputation as a leader is a sham. His election victories are shams.

2. I read part of your post to my husband, who said,
"You really think he's going to get up there and say, 'Hey, America, I screwed up, but you're the ones who are _____ed, ha ha.'?

3. Using the American Military as a prop
is Bush's standard way of reinforcing his theme: patriotism! Bush is the cuckolded commander in chief who needs to 'rally' the troops at the base and in the heartland. July 4 is coming up and it will be 24/7 nonstop patriotism, bush style (probably complete with a mad cow BBQ).

His "truth" will be purely cotton candy spin because he would have to answer some basic questions and THEN lay out a strategy for success that was authentic. Totally beyond him now, because commander cuckoo bananas would have to acknowledge some major mistakes and his pride is holding him back and pinning him down. Pride goeth before a fall...

Definitely not a Biden fan, but will support a call for truth, though it is clear that will go unheeded by the Crawford idiot-in-chief!

:hi:

4. What does "leveling" mean.....
in Biden's opinion?

Biden is not for withdrawal of troops. I fear "leveling" in Biden's view means escalating the troop levels, which means re-instating the draft.

While that may mean political suicide for the republicans, more dead kids coming home in the middle of the night is not the answer to the mess in Iraq.

Get out of Iraq, now.

7. from biden's speech
and his call to level to people I think he's being diplomatic and telling bush* to stop lieing, spinning and tap dancing.

Biden stressed that failure by bush* in Iraq means failure for America. He appealed to a sense of unity and stressed that in order to win the support of americans that bush* has to "level with the American people"

8. I think that is total bullshit...
"America" HAS failed in Iraq.

The war was sold on nothing but lies and manipulation of intelligence.

"Leveling with the American people" is just about as a ridiculous a suggestion one could make regarding the Bush administration.

The horse is already out of the barn, as it were.

There is only one solution. Declare victory, hand over Iraq to their own people and leave otherwise the killing will have no end.

11. In order to fail
One has to know what the goal is. We know it was not to find WMD and it was not to install democracy. So what was the goal?

To establish US military bases in the Middle East in time for Peak Oil wars; to return Iraq to a US$ exchange on oil sales from the euro base that Saddam had established and to threaten any oil-producing nation who considers moving to the euro (e.g. Venezuela); to line the pockets of his cronies with perpetual money hose; to distract the American public from low employment and out of control debt; to provide an excuse for dismantling the social fabric, read entitlement programs such as Social Security and Medicare, which has been the Republican goal for decades; to disable the Democrats by providing a nationalistic fervor that renders any questions or criticism they may have as unpatriotic and divisive.

By these measures, the action in Iraq has been a roaring success.

13. I agree with your assessment. What a price to pay for "success"
An ignorant public is needed for these schemes to work.

As long as there are people like us to tell the truth, they will not succeed.

10. He doens't have to say anything...
His base loves him, it will take a lot of evidence and other correlating paper work to even make a dent in RW base thinking. I do believe, without a shadow of a doubut, if GWB got proved, guilty of being a child moleter, the RW base would disregard it as elite leftist liberal bias. Its their answer to anything that they don't agree with. Its sad. There has to be something that RW base is effected by, discussing the war or antying like that is, well, our country, hs become littered with Nationlists, and mmost of them are Bush supporters, and how dare anyone talk trash about a nationlists country? Get the ideaology?

Bush won't have to say anything. Its a rally the troops, if the troops are for the war, then the common citzen must be also, its the thinking of the RW base...don't ask me why. It just is. I asked a fellow RW i debate with a lot from Ark, if she thinks Soldiers are infallibe, godlike, or always tell the truth? She didn't answer me on that question, so i ask, why do they, RW supporters take every word that comes from a Soldiers mouth as the pure, god truth? Remeber Xfiles, "Question Everything"...well, i'm done for now...:D

Yup, that sums it up quite well for the American people and the world.

Awesome work, radfringe! An excellent and poignantly truthful and accurate assesment ever!!! =)
