1. It's not a cure all
but I think that suggestion has alot of merit, especially the exercise part.

4. exercise he
has a few good points, but he is an intolerant zealot. He would fit right into our church. There are people there that say "depression is a result of sin. You need to repent from your sin, not mask it with antidepressants." Just like Tom, he's a moron.

2. Reminds of that guy in South Africa...
...who claims that AIDS should be treated with vitamins instead of antivirals.

3. There are a lot of people out there who believe that we are
over medicating TOO much and I agree with them. There are also many people out there who are not scientologists and not crazy who believe that through the use of excersise, diet, vitamins and natural equivalents to drugs say like Loft you can get the same effects. I am not sure where I stand with them.

6. Well, sometimes when a person is suffering from mild to moderate
depression, exercise can create endorphins which will temporarily help with the levels of serotonin.

Exercise certainly isn't a bad thing, but a lot of times it is just not enough. Certainly not in an individual who is suffering from major to severe chronic depression and is having suicidal ideations.

Cruise is an idiot.

9. Exactly my point.
Yes, pharmaceuticals are over prescribed, but dammit a lot of people would really be hurting without them.

11. I am not saying abandon the pharmaceuticals at all
Edited on Sat Jun-25-05 12:56 PM by lenidog
I just saying lets try and take a little more care when we prescribe them. Lets look at possible alternatives instead of blind obediance to the pharmaceutical companies who in the end their only loyalty is to the bottom line. You listen to some of these commericials for pills and the side effects are almost worst than the disease sometimes. Look at the warnings the FDA finally released on anti-depressants what this year. I had read about some of them causing suicidal thoughts in people 5 years ago.

13. yes - and others don't understand, do they?
... that's what I've heard from those with CFS, CFIDS & gulf war syndrome vets

I suspect 2-butoxyethanol has harmed them & that for those with direct exposure they would have this fatigue that doctors are looking for: autoimmune hemolytic anemia as evidenced for many years with blood in urine and immature red blood cells

This chemical also fakes true psychiatric disorder, so get those out of the mental institutions who have been chemically poisoned. STOP the prescribed 'medications' and get them well!

10. I do believe that his delivery makes him an idiot
But he does bring up a valid point I think. How many people on these meds actually belong on them. I mean the medical profession in many instances seems to have become nothing more than a pill pushing profession that wont explore any alternatives besides more pills.

14. When I first went to the doctor with panic disorder
She immediately wanted to prescribe me Xanax and anti depressents, asking me nothing about my life situation or current exercise or nutritional or sleep habits.
Severely ill people might need something now, people who are surviving alright might want to try other alternatives. Diet and exercise do have an effect on brain chemistry. Taken to an extreme, poor diet will cause almost anyone to have some sort of depression, anxiety, or other mood disorder. That is one reason that anorexics are often not prescribed anti depressents right away.
