<snip>
Outrageous as these examples are, they are just the tip of a very large iceberg. Some 33,000 federal contractors together owe the Internal Revenue Service more than $3.3 billion in back taxes.

<snip>
A major part of the problem, the accountability office discovered, was that the agency that pays federal contractors, the Financial Management Service, often fails to ensure that the companies' tax information is accurate. In many cases, the management service failed to follow up even when federal agencies left out the names of the companies to be paid.

And, as usual, bureaucracy adds to the problem. The I.R.S. is the only government body that has a database of tax cheats, which it keeps confidential, the result of a statute designed to protect honest taxpayers from having their personal information publicly disclosed. Unfortunately, the agency has extended that reasonable protection to all taxpayers and companies, including repeat tax cheats.
</snip>

The senator from Minnesota has got it only about half right, but he is clearly out of line placing blame on the IRS. Some companies do cheat the system and I am very glad that he has pointed that out. By omitting some pretty common knowledge he blames the IRS for us not knowing who is cheating.

What he fails to acknowledge is that corporate tax information is public knowledge already. Acknowledging this fact changes what we actually know and don’t about these swindlers of our treasury. It also redefines the role of the IRS as not the keeper of all tax information, but as the government body withholding from us who is cheating the tax system. I should expect better from a senator, especially something as commonly known as this. I can understand why he doesn’t want to acknowledge this because then he would be pointing his finger at himself and his cohorts who make it so the IRS can continue to protect corporations from we the people.

I am willing to backup my contention is the senator going to backup his dishonesty.
