Undercover at the College Republicans National Convention . . .
just a small sample . . . (scroll to bottom) . . .

http://www.campusprogress.org/page/community/group/collegegopundercover

Sometimes it's hard to maintain your sense of humor.

Thus, here are some highlights from Rev. Jesse Lee Petersen's speech. (He is the head of BOND: Brotherhood Organization of New Destiny, and he is basically Jesse Jackson's sworn enemy.)

- "I am an American, not an African-American."
- The Civil Rights movement destroyed black people's sense of self-respect and their compass for what's right.
- The Civil Rights Movement took the men out of their homes and prevented black people from thinking for themselves.
- It is not racism but lack of moral character that causes problems for black people.
- The black leadership succeeds by keeping black folks angry.
- Now Muslim folks are moving in and trying to take over.
- "I don't care what people say, but (Muslim people) don't like us!"
- America has already given black people all it has to give.
- On reparations, he emphasizes the fact that all the slaves are dead.
- On those who want reparations, he says, "Instead of reparations, how 'bout a free ticket back to Africa?" (Raucous laughter.)
- "The Democratic battle is ordained by the devil."
- "It's not white vs. black, it's good vs. evil."
- "White folks need to get over their fear of being called a racist."

Eric Holpin, current chairman of the CRNC, was grinning the entire time during Rev. Petersen's speech. They welcome this man into their midst, and they give him a standing ovation.

And conservatives still wonder why black people vote Democratic?

1. I'm still of the mind that there's really no such thing as a "black
conservative" who has arrived at their beliefs sincerely (or merely through mental illness). They must be getting paid handsomely by someone.

5. I dunno

I work with a woman who could probably be called an African American conservative. She's clearly conflicted about some things. She used to listen to Michael Savage even though she recognized his racism. I think I convinced her she doesn't have to subject herself to that.

It was verrrrry interesting to watch her in conversation with another AA lady after 9/11. My friend was so angry (as were we all). She even wanted to ship "them all back to the middle East." The other woman told her, "You can't be doing that or we'll end up sitting on the back of the bus again." I kept my mouth shut and let the other lady do the talking.

She holds very conservative social values, and I think she has a hard time reconciling them with kindness and fair play in some cases. (Notably GLBT people.) In a way, I feel bad for her because she doesn't really fit anywhere.

She'd never endorse any of those statements, btw.

9. You're right. It's those damn "moral issues" again.
Somehow, even very rational people can somehow be duped into believing that gay marriage is a far worse problem than lack of healthcare or unecessary, coffer-draining wars.

I don't get it, but I don't get "American Idol," either.

12. I'm working on her
Edited on Sat Jun-25-05 01:04 PM by wryter2000

I have her listening to Franken and Randi. Randi ticks her off sometimes.

Many, many of her "family values" are positive. You should see the job she and her ex-husband are doing with their son. He's an outstanding kid. (I sure as hell hope the street doesn't get him. :()

I finally (I think) got her to realize that GLBT people don't "choose" to be the way they are, so she's okay with equal rights. She can't get past the word "marriage," though.

10. I should add
Edited on Sat Jun-25-05 01:00 PM by wryter2000
That we have a rather prominent African American conservative in Oaktown named Shannon Reeves. I think he's head of the local NAACP. He emphasizes "bootstrap" strategies for Oaklanders to make things better for themselves. In a way, his suggestions are very positive in tone, even if they're a bit unrealistic. (I should emphasize that Oaktown taking care of its own and making things better from the inside is kind of a theme around here. One reason I love it.)

Reeves was a delegate to some Republican convention or other a while back, and someone asked him to carry their luggage. That really pissed him off. So, he's pretty conflicted, too, I think.

I'm not likely to enjoy a conversation with the guy, but he isn't scum and deserves a good deal of respect.

27. For a bootstrap strategy to work you first need boots
That is ignored by many on the right who are fighting a class war against all poor people no matter their ethnicity.

17. I used to have an African-American coworker ...
... who spouted the segregationist line that "The Lord didn't mean for the races to mix." Said coworker loudly supported Jesse Helms: I think he really really wanted to be "an angry white man" ...

black or white, but he's a freakin' moran, so the fact that these people laugh and cheer indicates that they are morans, too.

6. One thing he said is true:
"It's not white vs. black, it's good vs. evil."

The "my group versus your group" mentality is the cause of much unnecessary conflict.

8. Rev Peterson
Needs to ask himself would he be speaking at this convention if he wasn't black.

He says things about blacks that whites aren't allowed to say (for good reason).

13. Chillingly ironic
Back in the day, the Republicans supported civil rights.

It was Eisenhower who called out the national guard to enforce desegregation.

Earl Warren was an Eisenhower appointee.

The Republicans supported the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

... And they dare to say the democrats have lost their way.

18. Sean Hannity on the Advisory Board of Rev. Jesse Lee Peterson's BOND group
Hannity on advisory board of this racist group?!

Quote/endorsement from Hannity on Peterson's website (http://www.bondinfo.org):

BOND has played an instrumental role in helping young men and women build lives which will help inspire the next generation. BOND continues to fight the good fight standing for the values of God, family, and country, and are deserving of our support.

--Sean Hannity
Nationally Syndicated Radio Host/Author/ BOND Advisory Board member

Also, check out Peterson's "Black" list:

""The purpose of The 'Black' List Campaign is to expose Hollywood's most anti-American black celebrities. Our campaign seeks to educate Americans about the beliefs, statements and actions of these entertainers." - Rev. Jesse Lee Peterson

He's calling anyone who dissents with Bush "anti-American" and those he's targeted his "Black" list campaign against include:

Whoopi
Will Smith
Harry Belafonte
Danny Glover
and more: http://www.bondinfo.org/activism/blacklist/blacklist.htm

The and Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation is a primary funder of Rev. Peterson's BOND program. Not too surprisingly, the Weinberg Foundation is also a major funder of the Heritage Foundation.
