Bush Warns U.N. Assembly About Dangers of Trade in Sex Slaves
Bush Warns U.N. Assembly About Dangers of Trade in Sex Slaves

By Mike Allen
Washington Post Staff Writer
Wednesday, September 24, 2003; Page A23

Delegates to the U.N. General Assembly had heard President Bush condemn terrorism and nuclear proliferation in previous speeches, but at the end of yesterday's address, he added a new warning, about the dangers of the international trade in sex slaves.

Scott Reed, a Republican consultant, said the international sex trade is the rare issue that "covers the Christian conservatives and the soccer moms at the same time."

"It's an issue that moderate, independent women can warm to because it shows the softer side of Bush," Reed said. "These are the women in the suburbs of the Midwest who will help decide the 2004 election."

1. Since it's pretty clear Shrub's...
...not gonna get much from the UN, the speech was designed wholly for domestic consumption.

One of today's commentaries quotes "Bush aides" as saying the speech aimed to be both an apology for his actions in Iraq (an apology they don't feel is owed) and a "defiant justification" of those same actions.

Christian conservatives and soccer moms. Apology and justification. Shrub is sweeping wide.

2. Contrary...............
to everything the Repuke talking heads recite each day about "this president doesn't decide anything by polls", each and every decision made by this adminstration is made for re-election (or in Bush's case, election). They do nothing without first weighing the impact on their polling numbers. I want to throw something at the TV everytime I hear that crap, but I'd spend most of my day throwing stuff at my TV. These people are pure evil.

3. He's playing the international for-or-against card ...
In the US, if you don't support him, you support terrorists.

In other countries, if you don't support him, you support the sex trade.

4. Hmmm...where would one purchase a sex slave?
Not that I would, you understand, I'm just...intensely curious. And I need a maid on the cheap.

5. Hypothesis
Any important speech that is going to get a lot of media coverage, like this speech, chuck in a nice noble sounding cause, so that the newspapers hunting around for something new to write about bush* write an article about it, and it shows bush* in a good light. Somewhat like what has happened.
