What are the best blogs to follow?
I'm aware of dailykos, rawstory, rigorousintuition and a couple others--but what blogs do you recommend? My particular interest lies in left politics and "deep" politics. Just curious what DUers are reading. I'd like to make a list to recommend to friends.

Thanks,

BMU

31. There are a lot of graphics on the page....
It loads pretty fast though with a high-sped connection. I'm running DSL. I've seen it load over a wireless connection routed through a high-speed one and the load time wasn't that bad.

What are you using for a connection?
Also, if you're running o windows on a PC, go to Start - Run - Then type in CMD and hit enter. After the command propmt opens, type tracert 66.102.15.101 then hit enter and look to see if there are any slowdowns or bottlenecks. All the respose times should be under 20ms.

75. Yes, I like it.
I see they have an extensive 9/11 "Exposition Zone". This caught my eye:

The 9/11 Commission Report: A 571-Page Lie --by Dr. David Ray Griffin, 9/11 Visibility Project 22 May 2005 "In discussing my second 9/11 book, The 9/11 Commission Report: Omissions and Distortions, I have often said, only half in jest, that a better title might have been 'a 571-page lie.' (Actually, I was saying 'a 567-page lie,' because I was forgetting to count the four pages of the Preface.) In making this statement, one of my points has been that the entire Report is constructed in support of one big lie: that the official story about 9/11 is true."

My emphasis.

To me, the events of 9/11 are the Bush-Neocon Achilles heal. Just this past week W once again trotted out that event as an explanation for the invasion of Iraq and the 'War on Terror' which he wants to be synonymous in our minds. But of course they are both PREDICATED ON THE SAME LIE -- that the events of 9/11 were a "terrorist attack" that completely outsmarted our national air defences.

If a sufficient number of people in this country would awaken from this MASS HYNOSIS it would quickly become abundantly clear that the people in charge of our nationa security apparatus are murderers and traitors all.

The question is, THEN what would happen? What is to prevent them from pulling another, even more deadly -- potentially vastly more deadly -- attack on America? They've gotten away with the last one for FOUR YEARS -- who is to say they couldn't get away with worse?

This concerns me deeply and I believe it should concern everyone.

49. Welcome Psyop Samurai! And thanks for the kurtnimmo blog
According to a Rasmussen Reports survey, nearly half “of Americans say that President Bush is more responsible for starting the War with Iraq than Saddam Hussein.” In other words, half of the Americans polled in this survey (and so-called public opinion polls are highly suspect) have finally bothered to notice what has been obvious for a couple years now: Bush invaded Iraq on false pretense, in other words he told a pile of lies. Rasmussen, of course, did not take the poll to the next level and ask people what should happen when a president betrays the trust of the American people (and kills their kids and squanders billions of dollars of their money to say nothing of killing thousands heaped upon thousands of Iraqis). In normal times, before the dark shroud of Bushzarro world slipped over the former republic, a president accused of such “high crimes and misdemeanors” (more like war crimes and multiple felonies) would be facing impeachment, although it would probably be too much, even during what passes for normal times in the United States (normal, back room imperialism as opposed to the in-your-face Straussian variety), to have Bush and his cronies shipped off to The Hague to stand trial for crimes against humanity.

I like it!

52. Excelent. Thank you for your reporting:
The new Iraqi government admits to 40% unemployment, but the unions, which are much older than the new iraqi government, estimate it to be as high as 70%.

Most families can only recieve water for 4-5 hours a day.

Garbage is being placed in downtown dumpsters and being burned right there (horrible environmental effects, I'd imagine)
Sewage is in the streets. During the winter, you cannot walk through the streets without having to go through it.

The average family that has all its members working an attain maybe 40-50 US dollars a month in pay. The average expense among an Iraqi family is 80-90 dollars a month.

What Karl Rove may NOT want you to remember, for example, is that some people did blame America for 9-11 immediately after the attacks; but they weren't "liberals" or Democratic lawmakers.. No, who were the treasonous, anti-American dirtbags who ran around just days after the 9-11 attacks--- saying that the U.S. "got what we deserved"?
They were Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson.

"God continues to lift the curtain and allow the enemies of America to give us probably what we deserve," said Falwell, appearing yesterday on the Christian Broadcasting Network's "700 Club," hosted by Robertson.
...
I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People For the American Way -- all of them who have tried to secularize America -- I point the finger in their face and say "you helped this happen."

Amazing. Religious fundamentalists brutally murder 3,000 people, and secular humanists are responsible. Of course, our old pal Robertson is still at it, in that he recently said that liberal judges are worse than terrorists who fly planes into buildings.

67. Iraqi Blog: RiverBend
May I suggest Baghdad Burning by RiverBend. Girl Blog from Iraq.

I'll meet you 'round the bend my friend, where hearts can heal and souls can mend...

http://riverbendblog.blogspot.com/
Excellent writing. excerpt:

The Dead and the Undead...

She stood in the crowded room as her drove of minions stood around her...A huddling mass trying to draw closer to her aura of evil. The lights flashed against her fangs as her cruel lips curled into a grimace. It was meant to be a smile but it wouldn't reach her cold, lifeless eyes. It was a leer- the leer of the undead before a feeding...

The above was not a scene from Buffy the Vampire Slayer- it was just Condi Rice in Iraq a day ago. At home, we fondly refer to her as The Vampire. She's such a contrast to Bush- he simply looks stupid. She, on the other hand, looks utterly evil.

76. Welcome to DU, BillCarson. Yes, riverbend is an important blog
that takes us into occupied Baghdad.

Detentions and assassinations, along with intermittent electricity, have also been contributing to sleepless nights. We’re hearing about raids in many areas in the Karkh half of Baghdad in particular. On the television the talk about ‘terrorists’ being arrested, but there are dozens of people being rounded up for no particular reason. Almost every Iraqi family can give the name of a friend or relative who is in one of the many American prisons for no particular reason. They aren’t allowed to see lawyers or have visitors and stories of torture have become commonplace. Both Sunni and Shia clerics who are in opposition to the occupation are particularly prone to attacks by “Liwa il Theeb” or the special Iraqi forces Wolf Brigade. They are often tortured during interrogation and some of them are found dead.

There were also several explosions and road blocks today. It took the cousin an hour to get to work, which was only twenty minutes away before the war. Now, he has to navigate between closed streets, check points, and those delightful concrete barriers rising up everywhere. It is especially difficult to be caught in traffic and that happens a lot lately. Baghdad has been cut up into sections and several of them may be found to be off limits immediately after an explosion or before a Puppet meeting. The least pleasant situation is to be caught in mid-day traffic, on a crowded road, in the heat- waiting for the next bomb to go off.

What people find particularly frustrating is the fact that while Baghdad seems to be falling apart in so many ways with roads broken and pitted, buildings blasted and burnt out and residential areas often swimming in sewage, the Green Zone is flourishing. The walls surrounding restricted areas housing Americans and Puppets have gotten higher- as if vying with the tallest of date palms for height. The concrete reinforcements and road blocks designed to slow and impede traffic are now a part of everyday scenery- the road, the trees, the shops, the earth, the sky… and the ugly concrete slabs sometimes wound insidiously with barbed wire.

77. Thanks, Lowell. Looks interesting. I liked this:
Note to all you he-men, self-reliant, macho conservatives who "just want Gubmint" out of your lives...it's time to either take back your party or switch. Because the era of Huuuuge Government is here, and it's coming for you (and your offspring).

The program is provoking a furor among privacy advocates. The new database will include personal information including birth dates, Social Security numbers, e-mail addresses, grade-point averages, ethnicity and what subjects the students are studying.

Today that's what it's going to be used for...but soon

According to the Federal Register notice, the data will be open to "those who require the records in the performance of their official duties." It said the data would be protected by passwords.

The system also gives the Pentagon the right, without notifying citizens, to share the data for numerous uses outside the military, including with law enforcement, state tax authorities and Congress.

This is the kind of thing every one of us must be concerned about.

78. He cuts them no slack
I've been following Jo for several years now. He doesn't mince words and you always know exactly where he stands. Besides, his service vernacular is easy for this old vet to follow. It is reassuring to know that not all vets are brainwashed republicans. In fact, if the truth be known, I think there are actually more democratic veterans than republican. At least among the combat veterans. The clerks and cooks were able to hold on to their republican beliefs, but the combat vets never looked at things the same again. At one time I was a Nixon Republican. This is because Nixon gave the armed forces the biggest pay raise in history, he ended the war in Vietnam and he opened China and defused that situation. Of course when I saw the truth and reality of combat in Vietnam I was converted and have never looked back.

71. Some suggestions....
On the mainstream/blog...

Dr. Eric Alterman is good... He's been there at MSNBC forever.
Reading his blog really helped bring me through the darkest
night right after the 2000 election. He is also a contributor
to The Nation magazine and a Fellow at the Center for American
Progress. Very prolific.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3449870/

Recently, however, I've been forced to avoid the
landmines set by Tucker Carlson.

(Note: Eric... You can send the check to... j/k)

On the lighter side/blog...

One of my favorite political web comics is Jen Sorenson with "Slowpoke".

http://www.people.virginia.edu/~jls6c/thisweekstrip.html

Slowpoke is always right on the edge.

On the radio/blog...

Majority Report with Janeane Garofalo and Sam Seder. Janeane is one
of my main sources of "Talking Points". She's always right on.

http://www.airamericaradio.com/shows/majorityreport/

One can tell she leads an "examined life".

While we're there...

I also enjoy Marty Kaplan's "What Else is News". Except
scheduling prevents me from listening as much as I'd like.
Time to start podcasting (or whatever the receiver of podcasting
is called.)

Mornings I can be found listening to Morning Sedition and Bob
Edwards depending on which is more interesting to me on a
given day.

87. Well, here's my new one (just found it today)- www.kateablog.blogspot.com
http://kateablog.blogspot.com/

About Me
Name:Kate-A
Mother of five (three in military uniform). Grandmother of six. Central America - Been there, done that. When I was 17 it was a very good year for small town girls....

(snip)

The US is no different than any other regime. Murder. That's what wars do. It kills people. It rapes. War stacks the enemy (dead or alive) in a pyramid. War cuts bodies in half with weapons. It digs mass graves. It's brutality. It's torture. It beats people to death in prisons. Then the government sanitizes the evidence and lets the IRC or UN inspect and issue a report that goes something like this..….."found the US government guilty of engaging in a practice and policy of violations to include racial and religious humiliation but no convincing substantiation or credible evidence of systematic and gross human rights violations"….And America high-fives itself saying see, we're just calling them names and peeing on their bible, we're not the bad guys here. Know too that the Army will have 32 such internment/resettlement units added to the Army’s rolls between now and 2008. So many detainees, so little time. Remember this is a "generational war."

(snip)
Those who consider themselves progressives will pay dearly and for a long time for their acquiescence these last many years. The type of government in power today is not going to go away by exposing their deceit and corruption. They've been exposed. They may take the money and run but doubtful, like serial killers they never stop and are thrilled by the power. They will not be deterred by petitions or moore movies or columnists or polls. They will not be keyboarded out of office regardless how many bloggers type it, wish it, print it and pass it along. The Democratic party is not going to take back the nation by a Cavalry charge on Capitol Hill, they can't even circle their wagons, and their hands are as bloody.

(snip)

Third World White

Faith in the American dream is basically for White folks, with the majority of those folks without good sense. Too many white folks don't grasp the turning point of what's happening in America today. Jerry Springer souls who see themselves as June and Ward leaving a legacy to the little Cleavers. And decent white folks who unfortunately still see the land of opportunity with the eyes of the 1950s. Poverty, joblessness, low wages, illiteracy, destruction of the family unit, has always been a struggle fought by minorities and now it's come home to Johnny White but he denies it.

(snip)

Most of white America also doesn't recognize that the same oppression that kept brown folks down is now targeting average Johnny White America. I'm not sure I'd even call it "oppression" as it is simply the law of supply. When there's too many to share the pie with, the greedy pie-keepers push those who are different away from the table. As the feeders grow in number it has to eventually exclude more white pie-eaters. Because upper class White Haves have less use for Johnny White they have to squeeze more white members down and out, rapidly. Once called white privilege, the privileges are being reduced for most of white America. Not taken away by minorities, goodness no, nonwhites haven't that kind of power. But taken away by their own. The old phrase "it's a man's world" is more appropriately a "white man's world", but today that won't take the average Johnny White man as far as it used to. No longer does the white ruling class care if Johnny White has employment, housing, education, opportunity, good health, it now doesn't even offer a definitive target to blame his fall on. As far as his "betters" are concerned, Johnny White can keep falling to the bottom. Serve or entertain is Johnny's options these days, just like brown folks have for a long time.

(snip)

White "privilege" is already installing little measures that will weed out ne'er do well Johnny White. Special "clear" cards for airline flyers. Banking, DMVs, and housing rentals are enforcing stricter ID guidelines all in the name of securing the homeland but sorting the chaff at the same time. Identifying economic status. The upper classes will find no hassle in paying extra fees, providing documentation, having underlings to take care of hasslework, to secure special treatment ID. At the same time it ensures even white folks who don't travel much are treated like the least of us. It ensures poor white folks don't lie to get that license, cable TV, telephone, HUD rental, cash a check, fix that DUI, or get a gun permit. Fortified America, with a lot of white folks joining the ranks of the brown folks who cannot afford to buy special treatment ID. Welcome to the back of the bus. According to Homeland Security many of the coming changes will allow the concentration on those groups which are more likely to perpetrate fraud, lying, etc. Not professional criminals, but the desperate and poor who lie and cheat like criminals, as the professional criminals are in charge anyway.
