Did Bush I deliberately have the Iraqi dissidents slaughtered? |
|
Thinking back...
How Bush 1 and the CIA urged the Iraq rebels to rise up (most of who opposed the gulf war), and then how they let them die.
Do you think they planned this from the beginning?
US media acts like poor George just didn't have the will to help in the end.
Maybe he wanted to get the Iraq rebels to be slaughtered -- so as to keep saddam in power (to be "liberated" another day).
I rarely see this ever speculated.
What are your thoughts?

1. Liberated another day? |

Highly doubtful. That Bush I didn't do anything to help the "freedom fighters" back in the 80s does say something about knowingly wanting Sadam to stay in power. Sadam, as we know, was a bad-ass and we needed someone like that keep things in line over there.

3. I have always suspected this betrayal was yet another... |

...classic U.S. foreign policy blunder (a la The Ugly American) rather than anything darker. But -- given the core malevolence of the Republican Party -- I suppose it is nearly as plausible it could have been a ploy to eliminate some of the potential opposition to a future occupation (like the Hitler/Stalin extermination of the Polish underground) -- or even more likely a secret favor to wrest some concession (?) from Iran or some other Islamic despotcy. In any case, it is clearly one of the unresolved issues fueling the insurgency: the fact that the United States has already proven itself murderously untrustworthy.

5. No. G.H.W. Bush is a fuckup who believed his own propaganda |

Whup the big bad mustached man, and his beaten people will bring him down. Ha ha ha.
Except for the actual handling of the buildup and combat phases, the Gulf War was idiotic bungling writ large on our part. The lead-up was embarrassing, either we didn't believe the obvious or allowed Hussein to give us justification to pop him. Not following through was imbecillic, and reeks of Ken Adelman's claim a dozen years about being greeted with flowers.

TARIQ AZIZ: Our policy in OPEC opposes sudden jumps in oil prices.
HUSSEIN: Twenty-five dollars a barrel is not a high price.
GLASPIE: We have many Americans who would like to see the price go above $25 because they come from oil-producing states.
HUSSEIN: The price at one stage had dropped to $12 a barrel and a reduction in the modest Iraqi budget of $6 billion to $7 billion is a disaster.
GLASPIE: I think I understand this. I have lived here for years. I admire your extraordinary efforts to rebuild your country. I know you need funds. We understand that and our opinion is that you should have the opportunity to rebuild your country. But we have no opinion on the Arab-Arab conflicts, like your border disagreement with Kuwait.
