Did anybody just see Rummy on MTP?
I'm not a Tim Russert fan, but I thought he started off with softballs and then started to hammer at Rummy. He kept saying that the US plan needs 107 battalions and we only have 3 Iraqi battalions trained. So Russert asked how long it was going to train 104 more battalions. Rummy kept talking 100s of 1000s of troops, dodging the question. Finally, Russert changed his language and said, okay "when we have 200,000 troops, then we can start to cut the US forces out of Iraq?". Rummy kept dodging and said that it was just too hard to put "Iraq pullout on a timetable"!

Rummy kept lying, evading the question, and changing the subject, but Russert (more than I expected) kept trying to get answers. At first he didn't. I thought he let a lot of things slip. But clearly, Rumsfeld was starting to squirm later.

Could Russert have been a lot tougher? Oh yeah, but it was better than I expected it would be.

1. Lied through his fucking teeth - I expected nothing less than that

performance.

The Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines are all doing well with enlistment numbers, the Army numbers are a bit down because we're trying to grow the Army so we've raised the goal numbers. Re-enlistment is higher on Iraq vets.

I count 4 lies in the above reply of his.

4. Rumsfeld is a master of evasion. He never really answers a
question head on. I did not see all of the appearance, but I saw enough to realize it is the same old same old.

2. Thanks for the blow by blow. I switched it off as soon as I saw it was
Rummy. I'm just not that brave, so, I was hoping someone would put themselves through it and report back. That's why I love DU. Now, if I could just get someone to go to the dentist for me...

6. My sentiments exactly
Normally, I can handle the neocons lies, but Rummy has gone over the top for me personally. His lies are entirely sickening. I didn't watch. Thanks for the tough reporters here.

12. We agreed that as soon as veins stood out on our foreheads, we
would switch the channel. But we were marginally impressed that Russert mentioned DSM, tried to get Rummy to say whether or not he agreed with Rove's comments about liberals after 9/11, and if he agreed with Cheney that we were in the "last throes". Rummy never answered these questions, especially the last two because it would have implied blame on SOMEONE'S part, but Russert at least didn't just let it slide without a few follow-ups.

20. i have the same problem
Rumsfeld, Cheney, Bush, Rove etc. - when I switch to a channel and any of these (and some others) are on, I literally begin to feel like throwing up. (and I worked in an ER for 5 years and never had that reaction) I have to switch away. So, yes, thanks to the braver souls on DU for reporting.

3. Russert actually pursued him a little
goes to show, Russert goes how the wind blows. I particularly was disguisted at Rumsfield refusing to say that liberals support American defense. What filth. Cheers to Russert for following up.

5. the reason he couldn't give an answer
is because PNAC plans to have a permanent presence there

That is why they are building fourteen permanent bases

In my view we are doomed to fail. The U.S. or any western country cannot occupy a middle eastern country

In addition, we are in the middle of a civil war and are too stupid to realize it

In the end we will have created a Shiite theocracy, disrupted the balance of power, and made the world less secure

These people MUST be impeached for the MURDER they have done by going to war based on a lie

9. Hear hear
Oh and I'm sure they know about the civil war but could really give a damn. As long as they can do their little evil plans.

13. Rumsfeld had billions and still cannot support his troops with
the equipment they need. He is wanna-be that has cost the lives of thousands. Impeached and charged with murder for countless lives; give Rummy a taste of the torture he condones.

BTW, I don't feel so bad that my pug is so fat, LOL, still_one. Your picture of the pug is a ringer for my baby. She is a 'full-figured girl'.

14. And the war "is going well" because he and the PNACers are
making a ton of cash. It is going well for them. So really, he wasn't lying. :nuke: :sarcasm:

16. All true. The truth is so simple and clear.
The lies are a pile of snakes, worms, and filth, but the truth is easy to understand.

8. "Have you seen Russert when he goes after a liberal?"
It wasn't disappointing or a particularly impressive interview. I've gotten use to Russert giving softballs to conservatives. It was his standard build up and wait till the end to ask the conservative a tough question. I will give him credit for continuing to bring up DSM.

11. Russert had Rummy doing a jig. Rummy started to become unglued just before
Edited on Sun Jun-26-05 11:09 AM by oasis
the interview was over. Much of the interview was Rummy's regular routine of ducking questions by answering in a roundabout manner and out right lying.

Russert presented him with quotes about expectations for the Iraq war that Rummy and Wolfowitz had predicted two or more years ago. Rummy answered them as if the war had just started yesterday.

Russert was persistent and seemed to be letting Rummy know that his bullshit routine isn't going to cut it anymore.

Rummy did not do well on this show. Russert pushed a little and Rummy was somewhat uncomfortable.

Better than I expected. They actually showed the clip of Cheney saying that we would be greeted as liberators. I'm going to try to catch the rerun tonight on MSNBC.

or has watching him for an hour caused you to unconsciously lapse into his rhetorical question/answer style?

21. I've reached the conclusion that Rummy lies so often he's
convinced it's the truth. He's also the master of evasion if he doesn't want to answer a question . . . which is most of the time.
