Mystery Shrouds Disappearance in Aruba
Mystery Shrouds Disappearance in Aruba

06/26/05

ORANJESTAD, Aruba - As the mystery of a missing Alabama honors student drags on, questions abound about Aruban authorities' handling of the Dutch Caribbean island's highest-profile case in decades.

Why were the young men last seen with 18-year-old Natalee Holloway left free for days after she disappeared May 30, the last day of a five-day high school graduation trip with 124 other students? Why did police wait 16 days after she went missing before searching the home of the Dutch youth who was flirting with her? Why did Aruban officials ask the FBI to send divers, who came to the island but never searched its waters?

Criminal experts say these apparent mishaps could make it harder for Aruban investigators to crack the case and may ultimately prevent the Holloway family from ever knowing what happened.

Attorney General Caren Janssen refused to comment on the criticism, saying only: "I can't comment on the investigation until it's over. Investigators must be allowed to do their jobs."

Joran van der Sloot, 17, and Surinamese brothers Deepak Kalpoe, 21, and Satish Kalpoe, 18, were the last ones seen with Holloway, an honors student from Mountain Brook, Ala. Her passport and packed bags were found in her room.

1. sorry but who cares
this is such a nothing story

there are thousands of people who go missing every year and they don't make the nightly news

this is just another example of the racism found in the MSM--if she was a black girl in the ghetto, this would barely rate a mention in the local paper

4. I disagree
While I do agree that the media is unfair I don't think they should completely ignore it.

27. stories like this are the reason that people don't know about the DSM
or other "real" news items

we had how many weeks of the runaway bridge and the Michael Jackson trial

but the real issues that face our country are buried under crap like this

and if we're talking about violence towards women, quick--how many women have been killed this week by husbands, boyfriends, etc?

how many women have been forced into shelters because of domestic abuse?

let's not trivialize the real victims in this country by focusing on some missing tourist

8. What are you talking about??? This story is MOST important
If it were not important, then why on earth does the Faux News channel have not one but two of their prime time news shows broadcasting from the scene?

If it were not important, why would it be the lead story of every news program?

Geez, get with the program already!

9. Death of one is a tragedy, deaths of millions is statistics.

Using the same logic, disappearance of one is tragedy. Disappearance of millions is statistics.

10. That's not funny in the least
It's either a lame attempt to blame the victim ("she was probably a wild girl, and so look what happened to her"), or play on one form of exploitation of women (sexual) to explain and trivialize another (violence against women -- in this case murder).

It's not funny at all. In fact, it's horryfying. And I'm surprised and disappointed in TahitiNut. And you for finding it funny.

I find it horrifying that you take it so seriously. You are reading way too much into a harmless quip. Good Lord, lighten up! Aren't there worse transgressions to go after on this board?

I am disappointed in you for attacking TN and myself.

that trivialize that not only lame but harmful. If you don't like it, please put me on Ignore.

25. When we lose our sense of humor, we've lost most of our mind.
Edited on Sun Jun-26-05 12:43 PM by TahitiNut
You see only two choices: (1) blame the victim or (2) evil sexism.

That's myopic bullshit!

There is no proof, as yet, that the yet-to-be-found teen-ager is a 'victim' of anything.

And that is precisely the point of the humor I offered. The humor, if anything, is optimistic!!! I offer some laconic optimism that the 'heroic' victim of yet another tragedy will turn out not to be a victim ... and therefore not 'heroic' either.

Get it? (Sometimes it's sad that humor needs any kind of explanation.)

I hate to deprive anyone of a (prematurely declared) 'victim' -- since they're so fucking USEFUL for those self-righteousness parades!
:eyes: :eyes: :eyes: :eyes:

Many DUers have commented on this "story" as not (yet) being newsworthy to the degree that the press wallows in yet another cute-white-blonde-gone-oh-woe-is-us bodice-ripper.

I tend to agree with such perspectives in that the press often panders to prurient, sexist, and racist interests.

It seems to appeal to the witch-hunters of such interests as well. :eyes:

Afterthought: While the mythology says that when Pandora loosed all the evils upon the world we still held onto Hope, I like to think Humor was left in that box as well. Hope. And Humor. Unless you spend time in a combat zone, maybe you just can't really ever have an appreciation of their value.

Jesse Jackson says "Keep Hope Alive!"
TahitiNut says "I'd be glad to give Hope some mouth-to-mouth. She's a babe."

26. It is very sad you had to eplain the humor TN
I got it immediatly when I read it and I hadn't even had my coffee yet!

I thought exactly what you just wrote, we don't know if she is a victim of anything, just like the runaway bride story. The US press and especially faux news have run this non-story story into the ground and I truly hope for the pie in the face, she is okay ending like the last one.

peace, humor and hope,
lc

that they don't have a clue about the what or who, so they're arresting everyone that saw her that night.

18. Where was Bill Clinton that night? Inquiring minds need to know.
Was missing Boy Scout really at Neverland ranch in Jacko’s bed? How much money is the “Runaway Bride” going to haul in for being a wacko? What or who did Paris Hilton do today? MSM is on the job keeping America informed on what news is important in our scary post 9/11 world.

That because thousands of children are murdered in Iraq, nobody should care if an American gets killed or goes missing?

19. Just because one story is more important than other, doesn't mean
you couldn't care about a less important story. And you would never in a million years to get our media to report on the children murdered in Iraq anyway.

20. True
and while ignoring the murdered Iraqis, the MSM has gone overboard on the missing girl in Aruba.

I want to know about the other missing girl in Aruba. When this story first broke, I heard a mention of another US citizen missing in Aruba a year or so ago. If there is a problem with US citizens being kidnapped and/or murdered in Aruba, then that would be an important story.

21. My guess
My guess is that it was probably an accident. Natalee Holloway probably went down the the beach to party with these 3 guys, probably she had been drinking, they went swimming, & she drowned.

At that age kids think they're bulletproof. "Nothing will happen to me," is the thinking.

A tragedy.
