Even if you don't get the Employee discount? Granted, these things are a bit smaller than a Suburban, but that's one of the trade-offs.

Some $$$ comparisons:

If you get 25MPG and drive 15,000 miles per year, then

Gas: $2.20 per gallon
Cost of gas: $1,320.00

Gas: $2.40 per gallon
Cost of gas: $1,440.00

Gas: $2.60 per gallon
Cost of gas: $1,560.00

Gas: $2.80 per gallon
Cost of gas: $1,680.00

If you get 60MPG and drive 15,000 miles per year, then

Gas: $2.20 per gallon
Cost of gas: $550.00

Gas: $2.40 per gallon
Cost of gas: $600.00

Gas: $2.60 per gallon
Cost of gas: $650.00

Gas: $2.80 per gallon
Cost of gas: $700.00

6. Well my ford has 198K on it so far
and it is still going strong.

And doesn't GM own Saab now?

3. Annual prices aren't that bad; not until $4/gal is reached. What is worry

-some is the offshoring of jobs and other traitorous acts.

Find ways to keep population in check (and encouraged to think outside the box for the sake of the future), then we don't need to worry about the mess our country is in.

4. I'd wait three or four years to see if they can work the kinks out.
I like to buy autos from the U.S. makers (I'm from Michigan originally), but they tend to put them on the market before they've worked the bugs out, which can give a bad name to a vehicle that turns out well in the third or fourth year of production.

The U.S. version of the Focus is a good example. It was adapted from the Euro version, but had real problems in 2000-2002 model years. Two thousand three was better, and 2004 even better, according to auto raters.

5. GM no - Ford, maybe.
Sorry, but I drive cars 12+ years and 175,000 miles. I dont have confidence in those products fulfilling my lifespan requirements.

Audis and VW's only (and those VW's are the German ones (passat) not the Mexican ones (golf, jetta)) for this driver.

And yes, I am a ford shareholder with a long history of ford employees in my family.

7. if you use non Carbon chain oils like AMSOIL, you can get 1,000,000 miles
on an engine and transmission and 250,000 mile oil changes with a bypass unit.., the filters are changed every 12,000 and 18,000 miles... and about 8% better gas mileage, that should piss off the 'Man'.

link> http://www.ExtremeDutyOil.com he's my brother, got a good heart cut him some slack.. he is come'n around

this stuff lubricates so much better than oil he had to set his Idle back 200rpm on his 250 Chevy hot rod engine, when he changed over to AMSOIL.

it is basically what they use in military jet fighter planes. it has a flashpoint of about 980*F .

I have a science research background, and i am convinced this is a good thing.. it could make us independent of Arab oil.

8. Since this is fantasy-land, let's say the build quality will equal
Japanese cars. Would that change your decision?

9. If It's As Good as my Ford Escape Hybrid
I'm still PO'ed at GM for sending all the EV1's to the crusher.
I'd boycott them for that, but I'm already boycotting them for
building lousy cars. Their trucks aren't much better.

At least Ford still knows how to build trucks.

Ford and GM don't know how to build small cars. GM never did,
and Ford forgot how around the time the Model T ceased production.

Ford, at least, has shown itself capable of learning and partnering
with other companies when necessary. They own 1/3 of Mazda, and have
drawn on this relationship to produce the Escape (the Mazda Tribute
is very similar, and produced in the same Kansas City factory).
If there is a 60mpg Ford, it may well be another joint Ford/Mazda
project with hybrid technology licensed from Toyota. If it were
as good as my Escape Hybrid, I'd probably buy one.

I don't buy this "Murkan cars are SHIT" argument anymore.

My girlfriend...Oh, my girlfriend..."I won't BUY an AMERICAN-MADE car! I want a HONDA!"

Oh? would you like to pick one up at the factory gate? All the way over in BELLEFOUNTAIN, OHIO?????
How about a Subaru? Built 15 miles from where I'm sitting, and no, I'm not in Honshu...How about a Toyota? They're built in Hoosierland, too....

How about them Murkan-built fords and GMs? You got one built in Mexico, or Canada?

Don't blame the rank-and-file that they fall apart in 5 years, blame the fucking bean-counters who told the whore engineers to design 'em cheap and shitty....
