Two more Republicans are fed up and speak out
From today's fishwrap. First this guest editorial:

http://www.registerguard.com/news/2005/06/26/ed.col.chaney.0626.html

excerpt:

As of today, after 25 years, I am no longer a Republican.

I take this step with deep regret, and with a deep sense of betrayal.
<snip>
Fifty years from now, the Republican Party of this era will be judged by how we provided for the nation's future on three core issues: how we led the world on the environment, how we minded the business of running our country in such a way that we didn't go bankrupt, and whether we gracefully accepted our place on the world's stage as its only superpower. Sadly, we have built the foundation for dismal failure on all three counts. And we've done it in such a way that we shouldn't be surprised if neither the American people nor the world ever trusts us again.

Much more at the link. Then there was this LTTE on the opposite page:

http://www.registerguard.com/news/2005/06/26/ed.letters.0626.html

excerpt:

Torture isn't an American value
As a sixth-generation Oregon Republican - Nahum King family at King's Valley in Benton County, 1845 - I am a veteran of both Vietnam and Desert Shield/Storm with 23 years of military service. I am deeply troubled by the reaction from my own political party over recent comments by Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., about the torture of prisoners at Guantanamo Bay and elsewhere.

<snip>

As a U.S. military veteran, 1966 to 1992, I believe Sen. Durbin should be commended for his courage even though he does not represent my political party. It is the White House that mindlessly insults the troops, by court-martialing young soldiers at the same time it promotes those who set torture and abuse policies in motion.

1. The second letter in your post especially affected me.
Edited on Sun Jun-26-05 08:09 PM by Steve_DeShazer
I'm a fifth-generation Oregonian myself.

His (the letter-writer's) praise for Durbin is right in line with independent-minded Oregonians regardless of party.

I long for the day when I might actually have a choice to vote for an honest Republican, but it won't happen anytime soon, I'm afraid. :(

edited for clarity

2. Wow - Powerful.
My parents, both Republican, are gone now. (I have always been the odd one out in my family). I really don't know what they would think about the * administration. It was well into Watergate before they stopped defending Nixon. I would hope that they would be coming to the same conclusions as the long-time Republicans quoted above.

3. Great editorial and letters
I read the one about our screwed up health care system, too, where people have to host benefit concerts for life-saving medical care.

Plenty of people in Eugene seem fed up all right.

5. time to send the FBI to visit this guy
he apparently needs some "reeducation" on what it means to be a Republican. The only Americans are the Republican Americans in this regime. And the only Republicans are the BUSH Republicans.

You are guilty by reason of not agreeing with us. Sentenced to 10 years in the "Happy Lives" detention facility set up by Bush.

6. The letter hits the nail on the head...
The chain of command isn't stretched tight enough for the shit to roll back up hill, so we are punishing the non-coms and not the policy makers. Maybe we can find a way to hook up the jumper cables to it, electricy doesn't know hills.

If a Sgt. is in jail over this then surely Gonzales and quite a few in between should be spengding some time there too.

I want my country back!

11. I fully respect Senator Durbin's comments.
He was right on target about torture. Republicans can see this, and I'm not surprised.

12. I was fed up with that asshole Reagan
The writer is about 22 years behind schedule in my opinion. Asshole Reagan worked racism and other divisive issue quite handily to increase the power of his party.

13. He was a charmer, too.
Edited on Mon Jun-27-05 07:57 PM by Gay Green
That's why the Pukes called him "The Great Communicator." (The Great Bamboozler, more like.) Able to hurl a shitstorm of lies at the people in a manner such that enough of them said "Thank you sir! may I have another?" to keep him in office for eight years.

(on edit: spelling of "hurl" and add "such")

14. Yep. That was the beginning of the end.
The Reagan years were when all this shit really began to take hold. Dear darling newt gangrene and his ilk came in on Reagan's coattails, and the rest is VERY sad history.
