REAGAN won "Greatest American" on Discovery Channel?!
Edited on Sun Jun-26-05 09:13 PM by PretzelWarrior
supposedly it is being aired starting at 9pm ET about 20 minutes ago. Would appreciate an update.

thanks

-----------------------

on edit: I had my suspicions a lot might vote for him....but to have the reality hit me? OH MY GOD.

here's their contact url:
http://extweb.discovery.com/viewerrelations

and here's what I wrote. it is not very well thought out. just my pure rage.

I am VERY offended by the airing of such a pile of crap program where someone as dumb and backward as Ronald Reagan could make it into the TOP 10 greatest Americans. But when I saw he was the #1 vote in a clearly unscientific polling of America...with no weighted inputs from historians or experts...it just galls me. You are either purposefully or gullibly making yourselves the mouthpiece of the new hardline propagandist Republicans.

I will NEVER be watching your piece of crap channel ever again. Even MTV would be less harmful to my brain.

2. lol. yeah. I changed it awhile back to reflect my affinity with
the pretzels' cause. The pretzels whether they be mighty "Rolled Gold" or the quotidian bulk food pretzel have fought brilliantly for democracy. Much as did the mountain bikes and Segways for Freedom.

But we must not let their failed attempts to restore democracy go in vain.

Long live the pretzel warriors.

The whole competition was freeped. Plain and simple. Obviously Reagan is not the greatest Americans of all time. The fact that he's artificially ranked just shows how fake this "competition" was. I'd be more upset if he was somewhere between 5-10, because then people could argue that it was real.

58. The Discovery Channel has been a joke for years
Edited on Sun Jun-26-05 11:28 PM by Lydia Leftcoast
When it first came on in the mid 1980s, it showed a lot of great science documentaries and historical and anthropological documentaries from all over the world.

Now it's all home decorating shows (yeah, like there are no other outlets for home decorating shows on TV :eyes: ) and true crime.

It has joined A&E, Bravo, AMC, and the Travel Channel on the list of formerly intelligent channels.

I'm actually finding the pure entertainment channels, such as USA and SciFi being more intelligent than the allegedly "educational" channels.

18. The only thing to blame Discovery for...
...is letting the FReepers throw the vote. We DUers could not agree on a candidate of our own to vote for, if memory serves me right. But the FReepers are excellent followers, not leaders. They'll do whatever they're fucking told.

Besides, ginbarn and I thoroughly enjoy Mythbusters.

43. You really "care" about an online, phone-in, text messge
poll that you can vote on three times a week. Of course if you clear your cookies you can vote an infinite number of times. This has as much validity as online opinion polls and online petitions. This kind of stuff is pure BS. I'd never have known it existed if not for hysterical posts like yours. Not a flame, just an observation.

on radio and multiple TV channels. your post with the "oh man you've given them more publicity by mentioning it" meme isn't going to work.

thanks for your opinion. I just don't happen to agree with it.

This one is different than a quickie Wolf Blitzer poll or something else because it has been built up for multiple weeks on quite a few media outlets including USA Today, etc. People will wonder what the result was. Some people will be like.."oh...maybe he was great". and then the things they do supposedly based on his legacy will reach that much more level of acceptability.

When the subject comes up in your conversations, you'll have the opportunity to set the other person straight.

Also, think of all the lucky stupid people who were introduced to the Discovery Channel. It'll do wonders for In Search Of's ratings.

misunderestimated the stupidity of the American public. Any doubt about why we are in the shape we are in?

What a terrible indictment of our educational system, that Americans would consider a B-Grade ACTOR who was certainly NOT one of our greatest Presidents over the likes of Eisenhower, Washington, Lincoln, Martin Luther King, Bobby Kennedy, Neal Armstrong, Teddy and Franklin Roosevelt, etc. etc. etc.

And you're not the only one who takes long breaks. I haven't written in quite a while and when I saw people worked up over a TV show that maybe 20 people watch about an opinion, at first I just shook my head. Now, I'm laughing.

30. maybe you don't get why I'm upset. this thing is symptomatic
of a crazed population that is easily led along by deception by those who control the airwaves and news cycles. that has clearly been the conservatives and owning class for some time now.

so I guess this is one more way I am reminded we are losing the battle against facsism.

Much like Winston in 1984...we have to question our own sanity when the majority clearly go along with what the Inner Party puts out there.

again...how to get the PROLES to rise up out of their stupor...same as it ever was.

And those you refer to as PROLES are wondering when you're going to take off the tin-foil hat and live in the real world.

The way I see it both sides are saying the other side is blind and pointing fingers and calling names. I'm at the point where I find it all amusing. 300 million Americans, and if one-half of one percent watched the show it would be an overwhelming success such that The Discovery Channel has never known. But it only had a handful of viewers and gets a mention here. Pretty damn funny to me.

48. Here's the answer.
Don't tell me you've got your windows open but a TV show hardly anyone watches pisses you off, because I don't believe you. Someone shoots your dog, there's a reason to get pissed. Someone driving too fast through a residential neighborhood and endangering people and property, there's a reason to get pissed. A TV show on an off-brand network? Not in this lifetime.

The greatest American was my Dad.

Now, enough about an opinion program that 20 people saw, 19 of which are on DU.

51. Sadly expected: Freepers had an obvious vote, normal people split theirs
For freepers and conservative ideologues, people who sadly make up a large percentage of this country, this was an easy choice. Reagan was the only true ideological conservative in the bunch, most of the ideologues were obviously going to vote for him.

Normal people, on the other hand, could make a strong case for any of the remaining four, which probably resulted in a massive splintering of the votes of normal people.
