Cheney's Dead?
What do you think? I think the announcement is about him dying today or being comatose or something like that.

foreign-born citizens aren't eligible for the Presidency OR Vice-Presidency. If Cheney croaks, Condi's probably going to get kicked upstairs.

57. Not true
The constitution says absolutely nothing about the VP being natural born.

No Person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President; neither shall any person be eligible to that Office who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty five Years, and been fourteen Years a Resident within the United States.

Now, of course, logically, you would want a VP who could be eligible to be president but there is no requirement. If we did have a foreign born VP, he would just have to be passed over if succession came about.

68. The 12th Amendment
Part of it reads, "But no person constitutionally ineligible to the office of President shall be eligible to that of Vice-President of the United States."

And a foreign-born citizen is constitutionally ineligible to the office of President, therefore...

10. I wouldn't be surprised...
...if BushCo orchestrated a Cheney exit and a new VP.

They're tanking.

Who would it be, though?

McCain? Rice? Jeb?

It would be a brilliant political move to put in a place a very popular Republican in the VP slot. Then, that VP could run for president. That's the only way I see them having a snowball's chance in hell shot at winning more than 10 votes in 08.

That's why I thought of McCain...
...he's semi popular. Plus he's been jockeying for SOME KIND OF position these past few months. Especially with that "compromise" he so blatantly organized on the judges. McCain even contradicted Cheney's opinion about the insurgency being "in its last throes."

If McCain was the VP--it would help Bush's numbers. Bush would be viewed as more of a centrist and McCain's views would appeal to more Independents. The administration would get a bump from it.

I'm not saying it's going to happen.

It is interesting to ponder, though.

You never know what these rat bastards will do next.

59. "How can they tell?"
Credits to Dorothy Parker, who said it about Calvin Coolidge.

She was always eager to give credit to others:

If, with the literate, I am
Impelled to make an epigram,
I never seek to take the credit;
We all assume that Oscar said it.

I'm pissed. The health of the Vice President is hardly a state-secret. Does anyone seriously think that "The Terrorists" are waiting in the shadows for Cheney to die before they attack?

If the VP is sick: The people of the US have a right to know about this promptly. FDR was in a wheel-chair and he was one of the greatest presidents we ever had; Surely the Republic will survive if Cheney is disabled.

69. Last photo of him was on the 21st.
I did some searching for Cheney photos on news sites--if he were fine, we'd be seeing pictures of him. The most recent photo I found was taken on the 21st--six days ago. When was he supposedly put into the hospital?

Ibrahim al-Jaafari's motorcade flies the Iraqi and U.S. flags as it is parked outside the West Wing of the White House shortly after al-Jaafari arrived for closed meetings with National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley and Vice President Dick Cheney Thursday, June 23, 2005 in Washington. Iraq's prime minister reviewed strategy with President Bush's top advisers Thursday amid growing pressure on the White House to bring troops home from a war that has cost the lives of more than 1,700 U.S. troops. He will meet with Bush on Friday. (AP Photo/Charles Dharapak)

73. Jim's wild-ass guess
The Republicans have two choices: long-range planning or short-range planning.

In your case, long-range planning is like putting that four grand into your retirement account instead of that plasma television.

In the Republicans' case, it's what to do with this administration. Bush's approval ratings are so far in the hole they're starting to head toward his base numbers--that 30 percent of voters who would stick with Bush even if they found both a dead girl and a live boy in his bed. He's starting to exhibit the negative coattails I spoke so frequently of last year--his going down and dragging Republican congressmen and senators with him.

Here's what I think is going to happen:

1) They'll declare Cheney incapable of carrying out his duties. The Constitution says a president--and, by extension, a vice-president--has to be replaced when he cannot carry out his duties. This saves them the trouble of either making some shit up about his death or of actually shooting him, and it still gets him out of the chain of succession.

2) Here's where the long-range/short-range planning issue comes in. At this point we need a new VP, and they can go two ways. Long-range planning says bring in a telegenic, likable Republican from somewhere. It can't be a congressman because we could always pull out a Contract-on-America style election campaign next year and pull many seats from the GOP, and they need to maintain all of the Republicans they have over there. It can't be a standard Republican senator for the same reason. It won't be a moderate Republican because Bush hates those people. Hence, it's going to be someone like a governor, maybe a large-city mayor--not the mayor of New York, who is a the GOP's biggest limousine liberal, and not the mayor of Dallas, who really is a liberal. This person stands as VP until 7/10/2005, at which point Bush announces that he's not a crook and flees the country. Short-range planning puts Tom DeLay or Catkiller Frist in as VP as kind of a Danny Quayle insurance policy--if anything happens to Dubya, look what replaces him. (Incredibly short-range planning puts DeLay into Cheney's seat then removes Bush in a Soviet-style accident...oh, someone rigs the steering and brakes in his pickup to fail then sends him out to drive around his ranch, or has him go to Iraq to "cheer up the troops" but arranges for insurgents to shoot down Air Force One. Unfortunately for them, that really would cheer up the troops.)

3) Assume they're not stupid enough to install DeLay then ice Bush, or to install DeLay and leave Bush as the figurehead that he is. If Bill White, the mayor of Houston, replaces Cheney then Bush, he will do very well to do whatever it takes to turn Iraq into a market-based economy with a volunteer army. If given a timetable (atrocities stop this instant, people who committed them will be thrown into Iraqi jails by the end of the week, Iraqis sent to American business, government and military schools starting in September, Arabic-speaking drill sergeants sent to Iraq by the end of January, troops start being withdrawn in February, complete turnover in 2010) and we STICK to it, the civil war can be averted.

76. He Can't Appoint a Charismatic Republican
As VP.

Leaving aside the standard reply that there ARE no charismatic Republicans these days--

AWOL absolutely CAN'T ABIDE anyone taking any of the spotlight off of himself. He would pitch a major hissy-fit if he appointed McCain, and everybody started talking about McCain. He'd have to start viciously insulting McCain (all in fun, of course . . .) to put him in his place.

On second thought, he's already done that, and McCain still slurps it up.

would be a long slow deterioration on a vent with a feeding tube...they can keep your corpse alive for years, possibly suffering ...with no way to tell anyone to make it stop. We can only hope his next of kin are as self-absorbed as Terry Shiveos, parents were.

100. Oh they'll tell us when he dies -
Not only will they be able to pick a new VP, but they'll be able to do another "Reagan Week!" Well, maybe for Cheney, not quite a week. Maybe a "Cheney Four-Day Weekend" -- lying in State under the Rotunda, many speeches with some decorous tears shed, flying his body back out to high Wyoming, to be buried perhaps on some Western-facing mountainside in the sunset (a la the Pacific burial for Ronnie!)

Like Saddam Hussein, they are keeping several doubles in undisclosed locations.

This explains why he is so cartoon like. He is a just a bad actor trying to convince everyone that he really is Cheney.
