4. 3.09 is shock
for the normal price of 2.70 so you'll feel like your getting a break when the price settles between 2.50 and 2.80.

Cheap gas days are gone gone gone...

Welcome to Brit and the rest of Europe, why they drive those small little cars. I think it's about 5.00 a gallon for unleaded there.

5. High gas prices suck, but, it's still cheaper than feeding a horse!

6. 123 bucks a week
has to cover a horse! Doesn't it? Hay and grain.. that's about 200 a month isnt it?

If you fill up twice a week @ 3.09 (20 gallon tank).. 123.60

8. Yet somehow...
...they'll figure out a way to tell people that gas is really cheaper than it has ever been, after the price is adjusted for inflation, the phase of the moon, and the bumps on Laura Bush's head.

17. Don't forget you have to have a place to store the horse...
you folks in NY and other big cities will either have to pay or let it graze in your yard. If you live in an apartment, you're SOL. Oh, and don't forget maintenance. Car mechanics will soon be a thing of the past.

10. If you can afford a $100K Hummer, then gas (or diesel) cost is not a
primary concern.

11. It is when people start throwing eggs at your bummer.
Yes, I said bummer, not hummer.

The thing is, with escalating gas prices, people will look for the most egregious example of what's causing those prices to rise, something they can vent their frustration on. And a bummer/hummer is a mighty big target.

Remember to buy organic eggs which come from humanely-treated chickens, instead of the "chicken factory" eggs :)

13. My bummer? Sorry, don't have any kind of SUV, just barely have
a car, it gets around 30MPG. I'd love to see a lot more fuel efficient vehicles on the road. But since the OP brought up Hummers, and I don't ever see that many of them, I had to throw in a comment. Now, if gas prices get a lot of suburban cowboys and soccer moms out of those Yukons and F250s, that'd be a step in the right direction.

12. motoring is currently available to anyone...

but when does resentment set in when the cost is such that only the wealthy can afford to run a car? It's coming soon people once the oil crisis really starts to shove prices up so low income earners are excluded from the "dream" (sic) of driving anywhere they feel like driving to...

BTW, UK fuel prices are around 88-90p per litre; that's about four quid per gallon and price elasticity doesn't work where petrol is concerned...people need to buy the stuff to simply get around.

Edited addition: My wee diesel VW does 55 mpg if driven sensibly; 45-48 if I put the foot down. And my car produces 100 bhp at the crankshaft and churns out around 170 ft/lbs at 1900 rpm. Don't buy a gas guzzler people, because they are about to become a bloody liability.

14. Well, if you accept the peak oil theory, then prices are only going to
go up. At some point, mass transit has to make economic sense, I would think.

18. You are bang on the money
the oil crisis is upon us right now, hence the spurious reasons for "liberating" Iraq. If the House of Saud falls (and it will) followed by an Islamic backlash all bets are off.

Or insert "peak oil", sans quotes, into Google's exact phrase field on the advanced search page for loads more scary stuff.

20. Yes, lots of interesting stuff, I've been reading a bit of it the last
few months. The interesting thing is how much our agricultural production depends on cheap energy. As the Chinese cusrse we learned off of TV says: May you live in interesting times. And it looks like it is going to be very interesting in a few years.

In my case, my job is too far for me to bike or walk. And I have no place to stable or pasture a horse.
