PORTLAND, OR 2005-06-27 (Oregon Considered) - Oregon Senator Ron Wyden returned this morning from Cuba after a three-day trip that involved a visit to the prisoner detention center at Guantanamo Bay. Senator Wyden doesn't see problems at the base, but he still wants some changes.

Senator Wyden says Guantanamo Bay ought to be kept open because American GI's will look after prisoners more responsibly than would their counterparts in the Middle East.

Rather than corporal punishment, Wyden says the guards sometimes use inducements--like home-cooked Muslim meals--to elicit information. Wyden told skeptical reporters on a conference call that the new camp supervisor, General Jay Hood, has the prison in good shape.

Ron Wyden: Based on what I saw there yesterday, the abusive practices, the stress positions, the sleep deprivation that seemed to be ok in the past, General Hood was trying to tell us look, that generally is not OK now.

8. Well...that doesn't really equate to him saying it's FABULOUS.

It seems like he's just saying that the place passed muster on his particular visit, but of course we all know when a facility is being "inspected" everyone there acts on their best behavior.

It's not like the guards are going to be attaching electric shock devices to prisoner's gonads and sodomizing them while a Senator is inspecting the place.

I totally understood what you were getting at. Thanks for posting the link. I was just noticing that a few were expressing upset that he may have been singing the praises of Gitmo - that would be crap, I agree, but I think he was just saying that no obvious problems were evident on his visit, but change was still needed there. Which is better than saying the place was a bed of roses.

Hey, I've never been involved in the military or politics, but I sure spent 45+ years in business. Guess what? When you hae visitors coming, you clean up your act! EVERYTHING is made as good as possible, and you only let the positive geople out in front!

I heard about this trip last week, and my first thought was, just what do you expect to see there? You're the BOSS, coming to check in on the peons. Do you REALLY expect to see what's really going on??
