Tom Hurndall
In a landmark ruling yesterday, an Israeli military court convicted a former soldier of the manslaughter of a British peace activist as he helped Palestinian children escape gunfire.
Taysir Hayb was found guilty of shooting Tom Hurndall, a student and member of the pro-Palestinian International Solidarity Movement. Mr Hurndall died in a London hospital in January last year after being in a coma for nine months.
It is the first time a soldier has been found guilty of killing a foreign citizen during four years of violence in the Occupied Territories. There have been 11 deaths and a number of campaigns for justice.
Witnesses said Mr Hurndall, from north London, was shepherding children away from violence at a refugee camp in the Palestinian town of Rafah when he was shot in the head. The Israeli army initially disputed claims that a soldier had targeted the 22-year-old, but later ordered a full inquiry after pressure from his family. Hayb claimed that Mr Hurndall, an aspiring photo-journalist, was in camouflage and wielding a gun, but later confessed to wanting to teach the Briton a lesson for entering a "forbidden" area.
