Taught class on Ft. Bragg tonight...
Some of my soldier students were talking about *'s visit tomorrow, complaining about the media only reporting the bad news from Iraq (One student referred to the Clinton News Network.) "The media's not covering all the success in the south/all the schools we've built," etc. After hearing the NPR story of the soldier who had half his face blown off, it was pretty depressing to hear them rationalize. I didn't say anything because we had a lot of other work to do (it's an Intro To Art class and we're a couple of chapters behind). Usually I will have my say and back it up with facts. Just wasn't up to it tonight.

2. Are any of them due to be shipped out? Hope not, but -
You wonder, after they go and have been there a little while, what their feelings on "all the success" will be...

4. Blessed are the peace makers.
I don't think you'll really need to say anything. Just try your best to enjoy the times that you have with them as much as possible. The war will likely change their points of view should they survive.

22. Why are rightwingnuts so PROUD of their utter stupidity & ignorance?
They have nothing else to be proud of, they gotta parade the fact that they're the stupidest motherfuckers on the entire planet, like that's an accomplishment?

Well, they're good to laugh at, at least. Sure wish they'd sign up and go die for their bush-god's bullshit, though.

24. Of course. I was surprised by my students. I've heard previous students
speak more reasonably. Maybe it's just this group. It's amazing that they still don't get it. Usually, I get sloganeering as response: "Freedom isn't free," etc.

26. Mention to them next time about how those "schools" REbuilt -Iraq had
them BEFORE bush bombed the fuck out of Iraq- are now falling apart and have to be RE RE built?

I've a link around here somewhere in my stash, was a newish report, maybe 2 weeks ago. Can look it out if you need. :)

I was trying to recall details from your Bush vs. Saddam posting! There's just so much atrocity, illogic and lying to choose from, I couldn't think of where to start. I mainly thought of the data on child health post-war.

8. Have these soldier students BEEN to Iraq lately?
They sure don't sound like it. My husband's best friend is in Basra and sure as hell doesn't email that there is much positive going on there except "didn't get shot at today, no roadside bombs."

11. My stepsons good friend
just got home from his second tour from Iraq. I forgot if he's a Marine or a Solider BUT he mentioned how everyone he was stationed there with thinks Bush is a dummy. Everyone is trying to get out of the military via medical but some nuts jobs are having arms/legs blown up and going back for another tour and are killing it for the rest of them. No one wishes they joined the military now. This same guy (20 years old) was in some type of truck when a suicide bomb went off and he lost two of his friends. His hearing is still bad. One last thing, he mentioned that he believes that more Officers will be taken out by the enlisted soon. He mentioned that some career Officers are trying to use the enlisted for their claim to fame and the enlisted are hating them even more.

Just to let you know I heard the opposite over the weekend but his guy was alone around trusted people.

27. How sad
I remember reading there was a guy in the military who got a bullet through his head and he tried to get out of Iraq but they wouldn't let him. With a bullet in his head!!!! I also haven't heard Bush spouting some nonsense that the troops support him, have you? I googled last November/early December about the military vote's and what I did find two out of three groups voted for Kerry.

13. What ridiculous drivel.....
Is that why they're in Iraq? To corner the schools construction market?

Damn those pesky insurgents with their daily suicide attacks! They're preventing the lapdog press from reporting all the school construction projects...

Instead of listening to that moron Rush Limbaugh, why don't these soldiers try learning some facts?

Oil production in Iraq is below the levels they were before the war. Electricity production in Iraq has been stagnant since the invasion. The average Iraqi receives 6 to 8 hours of electricity per day.

I guess all the reconstruction must be going to all those schools....

28. These are kids
A lot of them don't know any better. They've been pretty much brainwashed from the get go. It's like that a lot for a lot of the youngsters. They haven't yet started thinking for themselves, so they accept whatever pseudo-patriotic crap that's handed them.

You guys who've been in a long time know what I'm talking about.

Eventually, they're going to find out about the reality of Iraq and the reality, as told to me from guys that I've talked to, is that Iraq is one big clusterfuck.

The only good story is the one where you're above ground another day and you're getting closer to getting back to the world.

You did right though.

These guys are going to have to find out the truth the hard way.

There's no getting around that.

who said in 2000, while serving with CENTCOM in Tampa, that bin Laden was a boogieman invented by the Clinton administration. I disagreed with him, but, hey, what do I know?... I'm just an "art teacher." But, still, regardless of age, your points are correct.

32. If that's their complaint about the media coverage
I would just tell them to watch Fox all the time. Fox News caters to that market of people who just don't want to hear anything bad about Iraq, the Bush Administration or America. Fox caters to that market and they get an audience. It's there for people like those students who wish to live in a fantasy world.

Network owned by a NON-American citizen. But the bigger issue to me is how pervasive the ignorance and rationalization is.
