This is going to sound crazy, but at times I've wondered if Phelps is a "plant." His demonstrations are beyond hateful and the media just laps up his antics to smear Bible believing Christians. I mean, if I were a homosexual activitist, having a looney religious figure with a relatively small following making martyrs out of homosexuals... would be quite helpful to my cause of portraying Christians as hateful.

We were talking about this guy with a blog, real loser, who thought the same thing. He thoguth Phelps was a liberal protesting the war when he showed up at military funerals. The idiot was saying they died for America's sins, or some such bull.

although I'd hate to be lumped in with the Freeps. Let's just bring up that old broken clock analogy for them.

Phelps' "congregation" seems to consist solely of his family members who haven't decided he's nuts. So, where's he get his support and funding?

Don't know, can't prove it, no evidence-- but I would not be a bit surprised if there's some surrepticious support from both sides.

The right can hold him up as the kind of extremist that they decry and show themselves to be much more compassionate and reasonable.

The left can use him as a handy whipping boy.

Both sides get mileage out of this pantload, and the cynic in me says both sides are at least glad he's around, if not actively paying his way.

What Phelps himself really wants, besides publicity, who knows...
