VAIL — News reports that Vice President Dick Cheney checked into the Vail Valley Medical Center this weekend for a heart checkup apparently were false.

News reports indicated Cheney was admitted to the hospital under an assumed name, although Monday hospital officials here said that was not the case. Health care laws allow patients anonymity, if they prefer.

Reports that indicated Cheney checked in under the name “Dr. Hoffman” — his personal physician — for a heart checkup also were apparently false, according to hospital officials.

One senior hospital official said the vice president visited Dr. Richard Steadman of the Steadman Hawkins Clinic to have his knee examined. That appointment had been made in advance, the official said.

(Even the VP doesn't get house calls, eh?)

The official, who requested anonymity, said he’d bet “a large amount of money” that Cheney had not had an electrocardiogram, or EKG, with internist Dr. Jack Eck, as had been reported.

Cheney left the Eagle County Airport on his Gulfstream V jet to an undisclosed location Saturday evening after the medical visit, and returned Sunday. Cheney’s jet left the airport Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. for a four-hour flight to Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland, airport officials said.
