Read today on a Reuters article that China has opened up her bomb shelters to the masses to "escape the summer heat". Do they know something we don't? Are we about to initiate nuclear war with China? Unfortunately, thats not even the worst case scenario. Given the recent action of the chimp and his cronies, its not too unlikely that we have a "special arrangement" with the Chinese. They are having trouble with their populace because of their new hardliner PM and BushCo. is having trouble with his "populace" as well. Perhaps a new "crisis" is in order? Maybe even a limited nuclear exchange, a scenario that would give unlimited power to the BushCo? They wrested power from the hands of the poeple for 2 elections, whats the next step to ensure we never get that power back? How far will they go?

I think it is better NOT to think about that, frankly.

escape the summer heat.
Bomb shelters are useless and most governments know that now. Global warming is a bigger threat.

but I don't think that actual effectiveness of the bomb shelter is as important to the political apparatus as "percieved effectiveness". In other words its more important that the Chinese populace believe the bomb shelters will be effective. As for GWarming, you're right, a much more insidious apocalypse due to its slow nature.

8. Another Jab to Bush's Chin.... |
|
Bush going on TV tonight to Rah Rah the War...but, rather than doing his last minute lie-prep, he's going to have to take time out of his nap filled day to deal w/ the fact that China is pouring people into its bomb shelters...this will beg the basic question "WHY????" This will take hours and hours of diplomatic scrambling. Phone calls, faxes, emails, memos, staffers running up and down hallways. Assembling the National Security Council. Reviving Cheney out of his coma..etc..etc..
China is keeping Bush busy, keeping him off balance, not letting him relax...Darfur, Unocal, bomb shelters, Taiwan, oil, North Korea negotiations...
China is making itself into Bush's worst nightmare

falling right into place at the right time? Seems a little fishy to me. This administration has already shown a commitment to use armed forces around the globe, why instigate now? Why not wait for a more stable President? Hell, the chimp liable to push the button tonight for crying out loud! I'd say its more crazy for the Chinese to do this on their own hook than to play lets make a deal with BushCo in the name of "internal security"

....riots in Anhui Province of China on Sunday, government intervention stirs more unrest. Their PM is going to have to take some serious measures to keep the people under control.

11. If I were in charge and thought the shelters would be needed |
|
in the next six months, I would *not* open them up. I'd be prepping them--adding stockpiles, cots, and the like. I wouldn't be letting people use them.

12. They've also converted them to giant shopping malls |
|
The Mao era constructed massive underground bunkers that are, like my basement, cool. Many are empty. Some have been turned into shopping malls. No news here.

.....the fact that they're opening stocked bomb shelters in urban areas is disturbing. This isn't a mall renovation. What will seal it for me is whether or not these structures are undreground or aboveground. If below, they can withstand all but the most devastating nuclear attacks (with the right equip, of course). I'm sure the Chinese have prepapred for this eventuality.
