2. Very Anti-Abortion
Life of the mother only.

This makes me uncomfortable because I am a supporter of Planned Parenthood.

However, Bob Casey Jr is progressive on most other issues (except guns). And he does support funding for birth control.

3. He's an anti-abortion, but otherwise liberal, Democrat
Just like his father and just like most of the people in the area he grew up, northeastern PA. Which also happens to be the area where I grew up and where I went to school with him and his siblings.

I, however, am pro-choice. If I still lived in PA, I'd vote for him, particularly to get rid of Santorum.

4. As a PA resident, there are two reasons why I'd vote Casey regardless...
Not a "safe, legal and rare" guy but.....

#1. I would rather have him as my junior Senator in DC than as my Governor in PA

#2. Despite his very Catholic family history (remember his father took Planned Parenthood to the Supreme Court), he is no worse than Rick Santorum. With Ricky the 3rd most powerful Republican in DC, he is really dangerous on many fronts.

Assuming he wins the Democratic primary, I will hold my nose and vote for Casey. Rick MUST go.

5. Anti-choice period...
Except for cases where the mother's life is at risk (I guess THOSE babies aren't as important)

I don't know what to do - I loathe Santorum but admire his stance on the puppy mill legislation, but I loathe Casey for his anti-abortion stance. Protection for animals and the right to choice are my number one issues, so I'm damned if I vote for one and damned if I vote for the other. May not vote for that office at all...not sure yet.

6. Unlike most GOP anti-abortion politicians ...
... Casey actually thinks that low-income pregnant women should get financial and other help.

I disagree with his anti-choice view, but I respect him for proposing constructive courses of action, imperfect though his plans may be. I don't think this will be a liability either for him or the Democratic Party, especially since his new job will not require making anti-choice laws.

There's pros and cons to any situation. I'd say he's firmly on the "pro" side. Of course, even a biker strung out on angel dust would be a better choice than Rick "Man-on-Dog Sex" Santorum, but we could do a whole lot worse than to have Casey running.

7. If he's like his dad...
...and I think he is, then he's pretty staunchly anti-choice, unfortunately.

As I understand it, though, the rest of his progressive credentials are pretty solid (Labor, civil rights, etc.)

And he's got a REALLY good shot at kicking Santorum's Santorum-filled ass out of the Senate.

If you're unable to support an ardent anti-choice candidate, though, you can support Chuck Pennachio in the Dem primary. Not as well known as Bobby, and it will be a much more difficult race to beat Santorum, IMHO.

If your main goal is to see Ricky gone, then throw your support behind Casey. If you are a single-issue voter, however, then you want to back Pennachio, even if it means that Santorum might get back in there.

Pragmatism, or Principle. Your call.

Oh, and casey has that monobrow thing going on. Dunno if that's an issue for you either.

(go here - http://www.dailykos.com/poll/1110821796_UNQCxdfk">DailyKos:Can an anti-choice Democrat win a PA Senate Seat? for a back and forth discussion amongst the Kossacks from this past March. Might help you decide where you stand.)
