1. Everything that's going wrong with Iraq,
is actually going "right."

That's pretty much the gist of the speech.

has a transcript. It must have been very short or NPR didn't broadcast it. I wnet in the store for 15 minutes and it was over if they boradcast it.

14. I heard the start of it on NPR in my car and then came inside.
Ask your local station if they bothered carrying it. It could be that they felt a rebroadcast of this morning's "Performance Today" was more important.

I missed the first 9 minutes of the speech.

Did he really say he understands the suffering because "I see it on TV?"

17. Yeah. He sais he "sees the pictures". Another lie, because we
all know that he counts of his advisors to read the newspapers for him and then tell because he doesn't need the media filter. I suspect they save the Funnies and Baseball page for him.

7. Imagine cutting and pasting from everything he's said
about Iraq for the last year or so. Nothing new. Warmed-over gibberish.
And this was the speech that was supposed to break his slump in public opinion.

I laughed all the way through it, having honed my sense of gallows humor considerably over these past years.

The mission the mission the mission, stay as long as we're needed, step down when the Iraqis step up, will send no more troops because the commanders on the ground say they have plenty and that would send the wrong signal that we're there to stay, fight terrorists, those that don't follow the Laws of Warfare and morality, the mission the mission, terror terrorist Iraq Iraqi Iraqis, freedom, if you are considering a military career it is the finest thing you can do, September 11, the mission, success is critical, over 160,000 Iraqis trained, terrorist, Iraqis, Iraw, ideology, Iraq, freedom, peace, godbless. Edited on Tue Jun-28-05 09:59 PM by Eugene
We must defeat the terrists and insurgents.
We're making progress. We're making progress.
Freedom. Freedom. Freedom.
And, finally, fly the flag on the 4th!
Be patriotic and enlist.

* basically restated his hallucination
of a free Iraq as a model of a reformed
Middle East. Nothing new but he took
a more somber tone this time.

21. Applause was prompted by WH staff.
spontaneous applause was when he shut up. WMD mentioned not once. Exit strategy not once beyond he wouldn't give a time and when the Iraqis step up.

19. Not a single statistic or detail about "all the good things our
troops are doing in Iraq". Didn't say how many schools or hospitals have been built. Didn't say how many more kids are dying of diseases caused by contaminated water or the elderly dying in the summer heat for lack of electricity to cool them. Didn't say how many innocent Iraqis have died in this cause, or how much money we're going to make on Iraqi oil.

22. Shrub Reading Words Words Words - Unconvincing - Iraqis-Iraqis-Iraqis
It was eerie. When the word was that he was going to talk with soldiers as props, I expected there was going to be a cheering circus like the SotU. There was no introduction (on the air), no cheers, just Shrub reading somebody else's words, the same words we've been hearing for 5 years, yap yap yap. In the last half there was one more bloviating platitude and there was ONE round of applause. Other posters here have said that applause was started by a WH staffer. Then the applause at the end. That was all. One of the games here before the event was for somebody to predict which word Shrub would be using over and over. The word was "the Iraqis-Iraqis-Iraqis". That was the whole misguidedness of it all: What the country wants to hear is "Americans-Americans-Americans"-- as in, why did we go there, what's happening to the country, we want America FIRST, not "democracy" in Iraq.

23. "Oh, shit - are they going to shoot me now, or wait till I finish."
Bunkerboy's facial reactions to looking over the stoney silence of grim faced actual SOLDIERS!

He began by looking really pissed when he walked up to the microphone, waited for a long while, and - DEAD SILENCE!

Not a single applause, nothing.

He looked real pissed - just like the first debates.
