Breslin: The daughters should serve

The daughters should serve

June 29, 2005

If George W. Bush wants young people to get into this war so much, why doesn't he send his two daughters over to Iraq and fight for their country?

The Bush daughters are 23, and at the Republican National Convention in New York last summer, they were a whirlwind at night. They looked as fit to fight for their country as any high school dropout.

This is an eminently fair thought. We have today the dead body of a young Latina woman from the Bronx. She comes home when it is clear that it is time for Bush to put up his own.

1. Great article
The part about the family got me:
In the blackest of World War II, they often didn't take people with families. Now if a mother wants to join the Reserves and then gets called up, off she goes to Iraq, even if she has as many as four kids, and that's precisely what you saw one morning in Fort Totten, in Bayside, when this mother on her way to Baghdad stood in the bus and her four children were looking up at her in tears. Absolutely marvelous!

Makes me want to cry, these parents who joined the military most likely to feed their kids go off and fight a war for the rich pompous blowhards.
;(

3. Queen Elizabeth served..........
in some capacity, during WWII, when she was a princess. Why not Princess Jenna and Princess Not-Jenna?

5. I have a better idea...
why not send their father over there since the war was his idea. Why should the girls suffer when it was their FATHER who started this mess?

I understand the "send the girls" line of thinking...but I just think it makes more sense to send the ones who are actually responsible. If the Pretzeldent thinks this is such a good war...he should be leading it on the front lines.

6. If They Tried it Would Be an Embarrassment
I don't think they meet the minimum standards. Way too much alcohol related incidents and police involvement.

He won't send them to the recruiting station, because he doesn't want the Army to turn them down.

9. But you're forgetting...
how Bush family records miraculously disappear. In this situation, maybe others would miraculously APPEAR with undiscovered illnesses or other reasons they couldn't serve.

13. If Bush brings back the draft,
and women as well as men get the call, we'll find out that the daughters are lesbians. Or, they will claim to be--you know that "If you don't ask, I'm telling anyway,"--another way to dodge the draft.

14. This Actually Would Be a HOOT!!
Daddy had to pull strings to avoid service in Vietnam. Daughters have to pull strings to get into Iraq.

I guess irony ain't dead!

12. If Shrub asked his daughters to enlist....
they would tell him to shove it. I can hear it now: "Why should we go and fight in Vietnam II, when you did all you could to keep from going to Vietnam I?"

Did you see Shrub start to cry at the end of his speech last night when he was talking about how our troops are the greatest? Personally, I think that, if he has a conscience, they were tears of guilt---guilt for not being brave enough to fight when it was his turn---guilt for sending so many of our sons and daughters to their deaths for a lie and PNAC---guilt for not being able to ask his daughters to go when he was such a damned coward himself.

15. That's the ticket. They could have some good parties in Iraq.
Guaranteed no press coverage and would not be in the public eye. Think of the mileage KKKarl would get from that.

who votes to continue Bush's war gets to sent their own child to support the troops in uniform.

23. And the other question to go along with this is why did
Tony Blair send his son to America to work with the Republicans instead of sending him to fight HIS daddy's war as well?
Seems that is 3 children who should be paying for the sins of the father's.

24. It's just fun to listen
to the creative excuses from the people who are so gung-ho for Bush and his war who are eligible to enlist, but won't, due to "other priorities."
Our neighbors are very pro-Bush. We try not to bring up politics, but they insist. They were giddy after Bush's re-election. We have twins -- son and daughter. And so do they (weird, right). All are 21 yrs. old. About to be 22. My son is a Marine (two years) and my daughter just graduated from college. Their two just graduated, also.
I asked the other day which branch of the service the son/daughter would be joining.
A look of horror on Mom and Dad's faces.
Understand..I want us to remain an all volunteer military. I don't want more kids going over there.
But...the gung-ho for war need to just shut up.
Unless, of course, they're willing to do more than talk to show their support.
And they aren't.
So, please, at least around me, shut up.
Really.

26. Jimmy Breslin once again hits a home run.
Edited on Wed Jun-29-05 01:53 PM by mohinoaklawnillinois
I called the White House comments line last night as soon as Commander Bunnypants was done.

My comment was this: If Mr. Bush wants more American families to sacrifice their sons and daughters, why don't his twins, both college graduates in 2004 and still unemployed, take up his call and enlist.

As soon as I mentioned Jenna and Barbara the woman on the line said "I have to terminate this call" and hung up on me.

Chickenhawks, all....

BTW, the number for the White House is 202-456-1414
