CNN Carol Costello questions Repub claim of evidence linking Saddam - 9/11
REP. ROBIN HAYES (R), NORTH CAROLINA: Thank you, Carol.

Good morning.

COSTELLO: Representative Hayes, your district includes Fort Bragg, where the president made his speech.

I want to read you an e-mail from one of our viewers. Dan in California writes: "Bush really should be making this speech at Arlington National Cemetery, not at Fort Bragg."

Was it appropriate for President Bush to speak there?

HAYES: Absolutely, it was. It shows our love and appreciation for the troops and what they're doing. The president spent three hours with family members who've lost loved ones as a result of this war against terror and terrorists.

COSTELLO: But isn't he, in part, using Fort Bragg as an appropriate backdrop to cheerlead the war in Iraq?

HAYES: It's not about cheerleading the war in Iraq, it's about informing the American people of the progress that's been made. The e-mail I got from Iraq yesterday, "a time line is a terrible mistake," "we are winning," "we will win." And the stakes, the future is Western civilization and freedom around the world.

COSTELLO: President Bush said in his speech we're there to fight terrorists. But he failed to explain how a war to remove a dictator bent on using nuclear weapons has turned into a fight against Muslim militants.

Doesn't he owe us an explanation?

HAYES: He gave us a very good explanation of what the war is about. It's winning the war against terror and people that would kill us, innocent women and children. This is about a military action against ruthless, brutal killers who have no conscience whatsoever.

COSTELLO: Well, we understand that.

HAYES: It's about destroying us.

COSTELLO: But that's not what it started out, when the United States invaded Iraq.

It's changed, hasn't it?

HAYES: I don't think it's changed at all. It's very clear that terrorists are connected to what Saddam Hussein was all about. And that again faces up to the most severe threat going forward...

COSTELLO: But there is no...

HAYES: We have to do a good job explaining...

COSTELLO: ... evidence that Saddam Hussein was connected in any way to al Qaeda.

HAYES: Ma'am, I'm sorry, but you're mistaken. There's evidence everywhere. We get access to it, unfortunately others don't. But the evidence is very clear.

COSTELLO: What evidence is there?

HAYES: The connection between individuals who were connected to Saddam Hussein, folks who worked for him, we've seen it time and time again. But the issue is where are we now. Nobody disputes 9/11. They would do that again if not prevented. Preventing 9/11 wherever it might happen in America, winning the war overseas, not bringing it here to our shores, is the issue in that regard.

COSTELLO: Well, are you saying that Saddam Hussein had something to do with 9/11?

HAYES: I'm saying that Saddam Hussein -- and I think you're losing track of what we're trying to talk about here -- Saddam Hussein and people like him were very much involved in 9/11. Did he make the phone call and say...

COSTELLO: There's no evidence of that.

HAYES: Well, I'm sorry, you haven't looked in the right places.

COSTELLO: I must not have, because I know of no evidence connecting Saddam Hussein to Osama bin Laden or al Qaeda. And, also, there were no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. And many people writing to us this morning wanted the president to explain those things.

HAYES: Well, we would be glad to explain it. I'd love to talk to those people face-to-face because hundreds of thousands of Kurds were gassed and killed, biological weapons were used. Fortunately, nuclear weapons weren't there. That's one smoking gun we didn't find. But it's very clear he would have used it if he could. The terrorists that remain would clearly use nuclear, biological, chemical, any other kind of weapon to destroy you, me and our families.

COSTELLO: All right, well, let me ask you this, because taxpayers are doling out in excess of $400 billion to pay for this war. You have the power when it comes to this.

Is there a time when you will say enough?

HAYES: I will say enough when we have victory against terror and terrorists. We are winning the war in Iraq. A time line is a terrible idea. That came directly from the people who are fighting the war. Progress is being made. The men and women are doing a fabulous job. There's a time line clearly with a constitution and elections being held. We stand down as they stand up. Progress is being made every day in the strength and confidence of the Iraqi security forces. That's what brings our men and women home. And the stake is our future and our children's future.

COSTELLO: A final question.

Do you feel safer here because of the war in Iraq? Is that preventing terrorist attacks in the United States?

HAYES: Absolutely. Well, we haven't had an attack since 9/11, and that's what we're here to prevent. And I absolutely do feel safer. If not now, when? If not here, where? And better in Iraq than in America.

Also, in reference to the last sentence, we've had the anthrax attacks. That was terrorism directed against politicians, journalists and postal workers.
Wasn't there a recent bombing in NYC near the (British?) consulate?

9. Carol Costello used to be a teevee anchor on one of our local stations
in Baltimore before she went to CNN. I recall her as being pretty honest and straightforward when she was here. I was amazed at the seeming turn she took at CNN during the run up to this madcap adventure.

I am absolutely convinced the management of CNN muzzled and scripted the news and the reporters and used fear for the jobs as the cudgel to threaten them. What amazes me, however, is that, so far, not one ... not ONE ..... reporter or producer has broken ranks to tell the truth of the stifling and shaping and lying that is today's teevee 'news'.

He actually challenged the repulsive Cliff May this morning.

I don't know of it's just posturing - because they played long, uninterrupted segments of the Beeg Speech this morning, too - but it's a little surprising to see them being more skeptical.

ON EDIT:
Costello kicked ass in that interview. I only wished she had pointed out that the Kurds were gassed PRIOR to the First Gulf War WHEN Iraq was OUR ALLY with weapons the US PROVIDED! These bastards need to be called to the mat whenever they spew these lies. I hope the people in North Carolina are smart enough to see through this hogwash.

Saddam is Iraqi.
Iraq is in the Middle East.
Saudia Arabia is in the Middle East.
Osama bin Laden is from Saudi Arabia.
Al Qaida is headed by Osama bin Laden.
Therefore Saddam and al Qaida are linked.

HAYES: Ma'am, I'm sorry, but you're mistaken. There's evidence everywhere. We get access to it, unfortunately others don't. But the evidence is very clear.

Okay, Representative Assclown Hayes, why is it that Congressional Democrats say that there is NO connection and most other Republicans in the House and Senate now admit there is NO connection? Furthermore, Representative Shit-for-Brains, why does your own president, when asked directly, maintain that there was no link between Saddam Hussein and 9/11/2001 or Al Qaeda? You know what, Representative Hazed, you're wrong on defense and wrong for America!

20. I find this gratifying
if Costello, usually a lightweight, is actually doing her job for a change, then a sea change is taking place.
Hayes, shakily, stayed to the tired talking points.
But they're wearing thin.
His secret squirrel act was kind of sad.
And very undignified for a man of his age.
I felt sorry for him.
Like Bush, he's suddenly in deeper water than he's able to navigate. And he's sinking.
And flailing about.
Bush was desperate last night.
Hayes was desperate this morning.
Look to hate-radio today to try and throw them a lifeline.

36. CNN's new strategy
Don't be shocked. The management at CNN has realized they can "out-Fox" Fox News and improve their ratings by doing actual, hard-hitting journalism. I think Fox is beginning to pick up on it as well, though they've got a longer way to go due to all the "personalities" in their employ.

I also suspect that a number of CNN's journalists are enjoying having the shackles loosened a bit. Although I'm not convinced that it's any sort of altruism on CNN's part - it has a very practical effect of distinguishing their brand and attacking Fox's at the same time - it certainly is helping our cause tremendously. Keep it up CNN!

HAYES: I'm saying that Saddam Hussein -- and I think you're losing track of what we're trying to talk about here -- Saddam Hussein and people like him were very much involved in 9/11. Did he make the phone call and say...

The Bush Creeple People looked under every rock and pebble for ANYTHING that would confirm this "darn good intelligence" years ago, and still have come up with squat. We already know that they will protect no source of intelligence if blowing their cover suits their purpose.

There is still NO real evidence that ANYONE was involved with 9/11. The evidence was destroyed. Quickly. And right in your face. Doesn't this Hayes-bot know that Bush was already planning to invade Iraq before 9/11? Was Bush blaming Saddam for something that had not yet happened?

See what kind of answers they get when the media ask real questions?

50. There's so much wrong here I don't even know where to begin...
One thing that struck me was the claim that there has not been a terrorist attack here since 9/11. I guess the Anthrax mailer has been conveniently forgotten.

54. E-mail CNN.
Tell them you appreciate a reporter who challenges bogus statements from Congress or spokespersons from the Bush Administration. It's time CNN stopped the Faux News imitation.

HAYES: Ma'am, I'm sorry, but you're mistaken. There's evidence everywhere. We get access to it, unfortunately others don't. But the evidence is very clear.

Oh sure, and I'm hiding and elephant in my underpants... unfortunately, you don't get access to any proof of that information... and despite the fact that others who have had access to my underpants deny this, there's definitely an elephant hiding in my underpants... trust me, the evidence is very clear that it's in there.

This dude's a whackjob.

60. Yup, I agree with whoever upthread said the man is a lunatic.
Imagine that you are a forensic linguist, investigating a case of brainwashing--a U.S. politician who has literally been kidnapped, taken to a secret bunker in, oh, Virginia or Maryland, electrodes taped to his skull, and certain phrases embedded in his brain, to be repeated on cue. The human brain is a complex and mysterious organism and how it processes sentence structure, for instance, is not at all well understood. (Try to teach a computer English sentence structure!). This man's brain is trying to fit certain embedded phrases into logical-sounding sentences, and the struggle is almost painful to behold. He strings the embedded phrases together, or throws one or two of them into a sentence arbitrarily. He real self--how own independent brain--is trying to deal with it. But he essentially loses the struggle.

He is not a lunatic exactly. His gray matter has been messed with--that's the feeling I get.

Some people are better at rolling the embedded phrases out smoothly. Colin Powell, Condi Rice, Orin Hatch, Karl Rove, Tony Blair...but this guy is very raw.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not trying to elicit sympathy for him. I don't think he was really taken to a bunker and zapped (although it can't be ruled out, I guess). I think there is a form of voluntary brainwashing that may go like this: You tweak the votes so I get elected and give me lots of money and a little fiefdom of power, and I will submit myself to your speech coach for a couple of weekends at the ranch.
