Reliving the moment. 9/11
Edited on Wed Jun-29-05 09:45 AM by trof
In once again invoking the attacks of 9/11 Bush reminds me more and more of the guy most of us know.

He's in or near his elder years.
He looks back on a life has been undistinguished and uneventful.
Except that one time.
Maybe he was a mediocre high school athlete.
Second or third string. Pretty good, but far from great.

But there was that one time when he chanced to be in the right place at the right time.
He scored the winning touchdown at the homecoming game.
Or sank the final winning basket in overtime at the championship playoffs.
It didn't really matter that his good fortune was due more to circumstances than talent.
For a few days or weeks he tasted glory.
He was the hometown hero.

And everything else in his dull life is framed around that one time.
His one moment of fame.

"Hi, George. What do you think about the stock market?"
"Well, Charlie, it kind of reminds me of the time I scored the winning touchdown in the Fairmont game."
"Hi, George. Boy, how about those Knicks?"
"Yeah well, I kind of know how they feel. Reminds that time I slam dunked the winning basket in the play-offs."
"Honey? What do you want for dinner?"
"Gee, I was just thinking that I wish you could still get hot dogs like they served when I won the Fairmont game."
"Hi, George. Looks like things aren't going too well in Iraq."
"Well, we have to stay the course. Reminds me of the Fairmont game. If I had just given up we wouldn't have won the championship."

The war-time president who had to manufacture his own war.
