4. Thats a little misleading

Army basic training takes 9 weeks, but after that the soldiers still have to go through Advanced training to learn their specific MOS skills. This can take another 6 weeks (for Infantry) to 9 months for language specialists.

but your basic premise still stands - we can train our soldiers much faster than whats going on in Iraq now.

5. Well, let's be honest ...
... at least 2 weeks of that training is in the manual of arms and marching in formation.

We gotta have ground troops who can be formed into battle squares, right?

6. If you meant Marines, it's more like 6 months to make a Marine infantryman
12+ weeks for bootcamp, another 12+ weeks for infantry training.

14. Not true. My son is a Marine
he spent 12 weeks in boot camp (Parris Island) and 3 months in infantry training at Camp Lejuene.
He has since received specialized training at different places. He is on his second tour in Iraq.

No one needs to train to die, we all do that by ourselves. But I get the point...

8. the few, the proud, the Maries!
:D

I'm sorry. I don't mean to rag on your typo. It just sounded kind of cute.

Your point is a valid one. It takes forever to train the Iraqis because they keep getting killed.

9. It takes so long because we first must teach them not to shoot at us.
The cute things with the names is our lovable local pundits way of telling you to change the spelling of the word "marines".

16. It's not the training, it's the loyalty.
1991, when the Iraqis started losing, their army went soft and many vanished. Retribution followed.

In the Iraq/Iran war, soldiers fought ... partially, maybe mostly, out of loyalty--but their territory was at stake; the rest ... their families were at stake.

2003 ... brave Iraqi army disintegrated. We like to think that it was because of bribes, but it happened all over.

Now, when police or army units are attacked and not clearly winning, it's easier for them to leave than risk their lives for a paycheck.

Think of it as ranked constraints. They have loyalty and allegiance, in many cases, first to family, then to clan, then to tribe, then to ethno-religious affiliation. "Iraqi" is none of these things, and falls way down on their list.
