Any good anti-Iraq-war songs?
During the 60's, there were so many good anti-war songs written. From Country Joe, to Phil Ochs, to The Kinks "Some Mother's Son"... too many to mention. However, I've only heard a couple written about the Iraq quagmire: "Rich Man's War" by Steve Earle, for example. Even college radio seems afraid to play them after the Dixie Chicks thing. Then again, maybe there aren't many being written? I was wondering if you amazing DU'ers could turn me on to some good anti-Iraq-war songs? Or anti-Dubya, anti-repuke songs?

1. If you're happy and you know it bomb Iraq
Edited on Wed Jun-29-05 10:40 AM by peace frog

If you cannot find Osama, bomb Iraq.
If the markets are a drama, bomb Iraq.
If the terrorists are frisky,
Pakistan is looking shifty,
North Korea is too risky, Bomb Iraq.

It's "pre-emptive non-aggression", bomb Iraq.
Let's prevent this mass destruction, bomb Iraq.
They've got weapons we can't see,
And that's good enough for me
'Cos it's all the proof I need, so Bomb Iraq.

If you never were elected, bomb Iraq.
If your mood is quite dejected, bomb Iraq.
If you think Saddam's gone mad,
With the weapons that he had,
(And he tried to kill your dad), then Bomb Iraq.

If your corporate fraud is growing, bomb Iraq.
If your ties to it are showing, bomb Iraq.
If your politics are sleazy,
And hiding that ain't easy,
And your manhood's getting queasy, Bomb Iraq.

If we have no allies with us, bomb Iraq.
If we think someone has ' dissed' us, bomb Iraq.
So to hell with the inspections,
Let's look tough for the elections,
Close your mind and take directions, Bomb Iraq.

Fall in line and follow orders, bomb Iraq.
For our might knows not our borders, bomb Iraq.
Disagree? We'll call it treason,
Let's make war not love this season,
Even if we have no reason, Bomb Iraq.

2. The New Gorrilaz Album is very good
In my opinion.

Most of it isn't that political but there is "Dirty Harry" which has a rap which goes, in part,

Chill with your old lady at the tilt
I got a 90 days digit
And I'm filled with guilt
From things that I've seen
Your water's from a bottle
mine's from a canteen

At night I hear the shots
Ring so I'm a light sleeper
The cost of life,
it seems to get cheaper
out in the desert
with my street sweeper
The war is over
So said the speaker with the flight suit on
Maybe to him I'm just a pawn
So he can advance
Remember when I used to dance
Man, all I want to do is dance

4. "The Price of Oil" by Billy Bragg
You can listen to it stream here:
http://www.peace-not-war.org/Music/BillyBragg/

voices on the radio
tell us that we’re going to war
those brave men and women in uniform
they want to know what they’re fighting for
the generals want to hear the end game
the allies won’t approve the plan
but the oil men in the white house
they just don’t give a damn

it’s all about the price of oil
it’s all about the price of oil
don’t give me no shit
about blood, sweat, tears and toil
it’s all about the price of oil
now I ain’t no fan of Saddam Hussein
oh, please don’t get me wrong
if it’s freeing the Iraqi people you’re after
then why have we waited so long
why didn’t we sort this out last time
was he less evil than he is now
the stock market holds the answer
to why him, why here, why now

Saddam killed his own people
just like general Pinochet
and once upon a time both these evil men
were supported by the U.S.A.
and whisper it, even Bin Laden
once drank from America’s cup
just like that election down in Florida
this shit doesn’t all add up
it’s all about the price of oil
‘cause it’s all about the price of oil
don’t give me no shit
about blood, sweat, tears and toil
it’s all about the price of oil

5. Peace frog's song is really great!
One of my favorites is from Jackson Browne (a lot of his songs are really anti-war, anti-government & anti-corporation). There's a lot in this song that makes sense:

I've been waiting for something to happen
For a week or a month or a year
With the blood in the ink of the headlines
And the sound of the crowd in my ear
You might ask what it takes to remember
When you know that you've seen it before
Where a government lies to a people
And a country is drifting to war

And there's a shadow on the faces
Of the men who send the guns
To the wars that are fought in places
Where their business interest runs

On the radio talk shows and the T.V.
You hear one thing again and again
How the U.S.A. stands for freedom
And we come to the aid of a friend
But who are the ones that we call our friends--
These governments killing their own?
Or the people who finally can't take any more
And they pick up a gun or a brick or a stone
There are lives in the balance
There are people under fire
There are children at the cannons
And there is blood on the wire

There's a shadow on the faces
Of the men who fan the flames
Of the wars that are fought in places
Where we can't even say the names

They sell us the President the same way
They sell us our clothes and our cars
They sell us every thing from youth to religion
The same time they sell us our wars
I want to know who the men in the shadows are
I want to hear somebody asking them why
They can be counted on to tell us who our enemies are
But they're never the ones to fight or to die
And there are lives in the balance
There are people under fire
There are children at the cannons
And there is blood on the wire

6. Gulf War song by Moxyfruvous
but that was about the 1st Gulf War:
Gulf War Song

(All, with Dave on lead melody)
We got a call to write a song about the war in the Gulf
But we shouldn't hurt anyone's feelings
So we tried, then gave up, 'cause there was no such song
But the trying was very revealing
What makes a person so poisonous righteous
That they'd think less of anyone who just disagreed?
She's just a pacifist, he's just a patriot
If I said you were crazy, would you have to fight me?

Fighters for liberty, fighters for power
Fighters for longer turns in the shower
Don't tell me I can't fight, 'cause I'll punch out your lights
And history seems to agree that I would fight you for me

So we read and we watched all the specially selected news
And we learned so much more 'bout the good guys
Won't you stand by the flag? Was the question unasked
Won't you join in and fight with the allies?
What could we say...we're only 25 years old?
With 25 sweet summers, and hot fires in the cold
This kind of life makes that violence unthinkable
We'd like to play hockey, have kids and grow old

Fighters for Texaco, fighters for power
Fighters for longer turns in the shower
Don't tell me I can't fight 'cause I'll punch out your lights
And history seems to agree that I would fight you for me
That us would fight them for we

He's just a peacenik and she's just a warhawk
That's where the beach was, that's where the sea
What could we say...we're only 25 years old?
And history seems to agree
that I would fight you for me
That us would fight them for we

Is that how it always will be?

7. General Joy~Tori Amos
General Joy
I know I know
you’ll take me there –
where your boys were
left behind

General Joy
it seems you need
a soldier girl –
now “they” have Liberty gagged

by boat
by tram
by motor bus
could it be the fates
are protecting us
from the Hawks that
have stolen the bird
from the sky

and I know
you will always love Sorrow
is that why
you gave her dress
to Happiness?
‘cause it matches her eyes
when she cries

General Joy
it seems
you don’t love your Bride
generally
you’re friends but
she is not the love of your life

to dye
to perm
to change your hair

or your wife
the possibilities
are there
and its time
for you to decide

General Joy
I know I know
you’ll take me there –
but you’ll need strength
from within
General Joy
it seems you need
a soldier girl –
and a willing coalition

by boat
by tram
by motorbus
could it be the Hawks
are protecting us
from the Men who
have now assumed
their name
---------------
There are a couple more on her new album, The Beekeeper. They have a tendency to be a bit cryptic though.

9. Cinnamon Girl by Prince
Edited on Wed Jun-29-05 10:56 AM by marmar
Prince - Cinnamon Girl Lyrics
As war drums beat in Babylon
Cinnamon girl starts 2 pray
Eye've never heard a prayer like this 1
Never b4 that day

Tearful words of love 4 people she had never met b4
Asking God 2 grant them mercy in this face of a holy war

Cinnamon Girl

Cinnamon Girl of mixed heritage
Never knew the meaning of color lines
911 turned that all around
When she got accused of this crime

So began the mass illusion, war on terror alibi
What's the use when the god of confusion keeps on telling the
same lie?

Cinnamon Girl

Don't cry, don't shed no tears
1 night won't make us feel
Cause we know how this movie's ending

Cinnamon Girl

As war drums beat in Babylon
And scorch the blood red sky
Militants bomb the foreign gun
Both sides truly die

Cinnamon girl opens the book she knows will settle all the
scores
Then she prays after the war that there will not b anymore

Cinnamon Girl

Dropkick Murphys latest album, The Warrior's Code, are good. If you get a chance read the liner notes on "Last Letter Home," it definitely brought a tear to my eye.

16. And of course the hit song "Why?" by rapper Jadakiss...
includes the lyric, "Why did Bush knock down those towers?"

However, many radio stations edited that part out.
