U.N.C. Starting Center's brother killed in Iraq
(Gleaned from today's Raleigh News & Observer):

By RACHEL CARTER, Staff Writer
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The brother of the starting center for North Carolina's football team was killed Saturday in Iraq, stunning the UNC team as it prepares for Saturday's game at N.C. State.

UNC junior Jason Brown learned Sunday that his brother, Specialist Lunsford B. Brown II, had died from mortar fire.

Maj. Steve Stover, an Army spokesman, confirmed Tuesday that Lunsford Brown , 27, was one of two soldiers killed in an attack in Abu Gareeb, Iraq. Stover said Brown had been a member of the 302nd Military Intelligence Battalion based in Germany.

UNC coach John Bunting drove Jason Brown home to Henderson on Sunday, and Bunting and assistant athletics director Corey Holliday spent much of the day with the Brown family before returning to Chapel Hill.

Jason Brown returned to Chapel Hill on Tuesday and practiced with the team that afternoon. His teammates expect him to play Saturday.
"My family is dealing with a tremendous and tragic loss," Brown said in a statement released by the university. "My heart is still with them in Henderson, but I chose to come back today because the football team is my second family. It means a lot to have so many people here in Chapel Hill who care for me and know what our family is going through."

Brown's mother, Deborah, said in a telephone interview that the family plans to attend Saturday's game at N.C. State. She said she encouraged Jason to return to school and his teammates.

Dub & Co.'s blatant LIES and disregard for our servicemen and women in Iraq affect everyone. What gets me--and I'm sure many of Jason Brown's Carolina coaches and teamates as well--is that his brother's death was entirely PREVENTABLE!

2. Was this soldier a relative of Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, etc, etc....?
No? Then he was a sacrifice Bush was willing to make for his re-election bid.

3. And here's hoping...
That Jason Brown, his family, and his Carolina teamates remember that--especially in early November of NEXT season! x(

4. Sad, but no sadder than any other soldier's death.
Who was the pro football player who quit playing to go fight? I wonder if he regrets his decision?
