Join the "End The Abuses!" campaign with a new avatar!
Distressed American has launched a pre-emptive strike to combat the coming White House spin regarding evidence of torture.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=104x3955126

The Pentagon hid the most damaging torture photos and videos from public view. But in the interest of truth and human rights, the ACLU sued the government and a court has ruled that the photos must be released on Thursday, June 30. The court ordered the Pentagon to get the videos ready for release.

We can expect many outrageous diversions coming from the White House in the coming days intended to take the nation's attention off the Bush santioned torture.

Don't let them. Fight back! Stay focused. Make people pay attention.

6. That Is Really Odd. It Is Less Than The 3k Limit.
I tried grabbing it and still got 2.48k. Should work just fine. As we are using it, it must be small enough. Not really sure. Thanks for the interest though!

19. This is what I did to get it to work!
I grabbed the actual avatar not the siggy slightly larger avatar. I then renamed the avatar. I then went through options to upload it.

Simple enough now... are you all gonna ask Admin to carry it with the other avatars now?

I think that would be most appropriate.

So yes you were right Kat!

22. I'm Glad You Got It To Work. I'd Love DU To Lead This Push!!!
Edited on Thu Jun-30-05 09:18 AM by DistressedAmerican
We are a large community and as the Downing Street situation proved, if we stick together and push an idea out the door, it gets picked up and spread.

I think the avatar is a good reminder.

Sorry about the confusion on the other image.

I just know how attached some folks are to their avatars. So, I figured it was good to add a sigline graphic for folks as well.

You have always been a great supported of my various ideas and drives. I really appreciate it!!!

24. and I good sir have always admired your fight.
Starting with those kids who got busted for no reason at that protest your sister was at (btw how has that panned out?).

It is the thing I take most comfort in at DU... finding like minded pissed off activists. Du has massive think tank qualities for those of us that spend lots of time here not just posting in threads but having in depth policy/action discussions.

You're right about the avatar attachment soem people have, because I wasn't sure I wanted to take my Conyers down (just like I didn't really want to take down my Boxer for conyers). However I know that he would probably be encouraged more by an actual activism avatar!!

So thanks again for all your hard work and initiatives, it is essential to our cause.

27. I HAve Been Meaning To Post An Update. ALL CHARGES DROPPED!!!
Just happend on Monday. That goes for three of the 9. I haven't been able to get info on the others. But, everyone that my sister had on video walked after a long legal battle (5 dates in some cases).

Another victory for justice!

Here's the e-mail I got from Emoly Colvin's Dad on Tuesday:

Everyone,

The court dismissed the case at the beginning of the session. Guess they realized they had nothing to go on. Same thing happened with the only other adult charged, John Spitz. It was a victory for civil rights. Our lawyer was great-spent much time prepping Emily and "doing diligence." D

Don't have final bill but will inform those who have contributed.

Emily, Sarah and I so appreciate your support, prayers and encouragement.

Many blessings,
The Colvin Family

ANOTHER VICTORY FOR OUR SIDE!!!

My sis and I are putting together a package of info to send to the ACLU. These folks have good grounds for a civil suit! Especially now that the charges have officially been dropped.

18. Torture Fatigue (In These Times article)
"When you become disconnected from your own alienation , you become cut off from your humanity," he told me. "You become numb to all kinds of atrocities." -Clinical psychologist Bruce Levine, the author of Commonsense Rebellion

Torture Fatigue
By Silja J.A. Talvi

"The Christian in me says it's wrong," Army Specialist Charles A. Graner Jr. said of torturing prisoners in Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq. "But the corrections officer in me says I love to make a grown man piss himself."

Photos taken of him demeaning captives at Abu Ghraib exposed Graner as the sadist that his surroundings allowed him to be. But are the differences between brutal correctional officers like Graner and other Americans as stark as we would like to think?

An acquaintance of mine recently admitted how much he enjoyed watching the torture scenes in the new blockbuster, Sin City. "I know it's strange," he said, "but there's something I get out of seeing torture and violence like that on the screen. It's like it's some kind of release."

He is not alone. Slate's David Edelstein enthused that the film boasted "the most relentless display of torture and sadism I've encountered in a mainstream movie. My reaction to Sin City is easily stated. I loved it. Or, to put it another way, I loved it, I loved it, I loved it. I loved every gorgeous sick disgusting ravishing overbaked blood-spurting artificial frame of it. ... It seems pointless to tut-tut over the depravity. Sin City is like a must-have coffee-table book for your interior torture chamber."

21. How 'bout placing them in that book, top drawer, nightstand in hotels
or hospitals?

Or inside of all of hannity's / O'reilly's/ Coulters and crews
books in the book stores! Usually just go to those sections
and turn the books over/ place a good book over their spew instead.

I'm armed and ready!
