The Bush Administration are spinning themselves stupid
So the new rationale for being in Iraq is "Haven't you heard? It's a terrorist nightmare over there! We have to do something to stop it!"

Excuse me?

I must've missed something. The last I heard, Saddam planned and carried out 9/11, threatened to attack us with his chemical and biological weapons, came this close to building a nuclear bomb... and besides, the Iraqi people were begging us to liberate them, and would dance in the streets once our troops arrived. They might even throw flowers. The whole thing would take six weeks - six months tops. It would be a cakewalk. And it would hardly cost us a dime.

And sure, none of that was even remotely true, but let's be clear - it wasn't Bush's fault. Yes, his administration were pumping 24/7 lies and misjudgements and propaganda down the American people's throats, but Bush was just trying to protect us from the WMDs terrorists. Oh yes, and bring freedom to the Iraqi people.

So now where are we? Well apparently Iraq is now a real live training ground for terrorists. Apparently, by invading a country which had nothing to do with 9/11 (except in the mind of George W. Bush and friends), we have stoked the flames of jihad and emboldened radical Islamists all over the world. Apparently Iraq is home to more and more foreign fighters, although - and this is a piece of luck - we can now "fight them over there instead of fighting them over here." Assuming they have no concept of multi-tasking, that is. (And, oh, hey Iraqi people, you don't mind if we use your country to fight terrorists do you? You'll get that "freedom" we were talking about right after we've killed every last one of you, uh, I mean, them.)

So whose fault is all this? Who was in charge before and after September 11? Who has called the shots and made the policy decisions and through the force of his "strong, steady leadership" guided us into this ridiculous mess? I'll give you a clue:

Yeah, it was that guy.

Take a look at this exchange from a Bush press conference in March of 2002. It's most enlightening:

http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2002/03/20020313-8.html

Q: ...don't you believe that the threat that bin Laden posed won't truly be eliminated until he is found either dead or alive?

THE PRESIDENT: Well, as I say, we haven't heard much from him. And I wouldn't necessarily say he's at the center of any command structure. And, again, I don't know where he is. I -- I'll repeat what I said. I truly am not that concerned about him. I know he is on the run. I was concerned about him, when he had taken over a country. I was concerned about the fact that he was basically running Afghanistan and calling the shots for the Taliban.

But once we set out the policy and started executing the plan, he became -- we shoved him out more and more on the margins. He has no place to train his al Qaeda killers anymore.

Whoops! I guess he does now! And wouldn't you know it - that's George W. Bush's brand new rationale for war. How convenient.

Look George: you broke it. Now, I don't care if you can't fix it - just step aside for someone who can. But know that history is not going to look kindly on your total failure to even own up to breaking it in the first place, you unfortunate little monkey man.

1. Yeah, its odd. He doesn't care about bin Laden
But now that he's created this mess in Iraq, suddenly we hear about bin Laden again.

Apparently he's "taking over" Iraq, and Bush even quoted him to justify our continuted presence in Iraq.

So, I'm wondering:

when will someone point out that maybe if Bush had cared a little more about bin Laden then we wouldn't be in this terrorist mess now?

4. Exactly
Suddenly Bush is worried about bin Laden/al Qaeda taking over Iraq, but it was Bush's own actions which explicitly created the conditions for that to occur.

Yet now Bush is using that as his main reason for staying the course. They do this all the time - they did it with 9/11 - spin complete failure into a new rationale for taking a particular action.

19. Circular reasoning
We are in Iraq because we have to be there, since that's where the terrorists are. But the terrorists are in Iraq because we are there and they know they can strike us there. So why are we in Iraq?

As long as they keep attacking us we cannot leave because they want us to and we can't leave until quit attacking us and they don't want us to leave.

You have to have a boogieman or the story won't work. If we had caught him, would we really have moved on to Iraq? Would the other cards in the deck have been scary enough to justify the loses as "worth it" now? Sort of like all the Nightmare on Elm Street or Halloween movies ... would the sequals have been possible if they had actually stopped the bad guy in the first movie?

When ratings are down, bring out the bad guy that got the best "box office return" and you are sure to have a summer block buster. As long as it's an Iraqi block that gets busted, we should be happy right? That's the message I got from last nights crapfest of a speech.

Great post EarlG. Good to see you posting. :hi:

6. I guess the good news is the speech was pretty much
universally panned, at least in the newspapers.

Charlie Rose did his pro-Bush bit last night with Michael
Duffy and crew to say how Bush "raised the bar" and how
wondferful it all was.

A spinning White House is a good thing. Means the speech
did not have the intended impact.

16. Thank you!! Now I dont have to write that post!
Personally Im of the opinion we should hammer home the "I dont think the Iraqis want us to fight them over there" angle as it shoots down any attempt at the humanitarian excuse and also reveals any prejudice which automatically puts a predisposition on the person who argues this angle...i.e. They can't be very well balanced/unibased or compassionately interested in this conflict then, their view can only be selfish and contradictory at this point in any debate regarding the "Iraqi Peoples".

Americans are tsrating to get how wrong it is to link 9/11 with Iraq all the time, so while debunking that is easy enough to do its effect is short term if you don't break through the "flypaper theory".

The fact we are creating more terrorists than we can ever hope to nuetralize, who are incredibly well trained, and have been recieving more and more financial backing every time we screw up over there.. can all be added after the fact that you might have hooked or gotten through on debunking the humanitarian mission.

My entire family is military, I grew up military and was so rw when I was a teen I scared my conservative family with such radical talk. Whilst they have since forgotten that period of our lives, I still know them very well, and believe me the Flypaper is all they can get off any sort of argument with me on. I've worked on them for over two years now and I think its starting to sink in, but if we were all pushing this argument the subconscious effect would help to break down this mirage of an excuse, this reason that was never really there...

Thanks,

Not turning it into what Iraq was under Saddam, but what Afghanistan was under Taliban.

to get some insight and very interesting wit & prespective...(Along with BuzzFlash, Bartcop, and listening to Malloy, Hartmann, Rhodes & Ward).

If I watch the asshole Bush....I not only go crazy hearing the blatant lies...but, more important to my sanity is that I think of all the people he is convincing with the lies and how badly the sheep want to believe, and how BushCo is quite aware of this, and exploits it masterfully...

Though Bush's numbers are slipping, Rove knows it would only take an incident (planned or not) to put the fear back in the uniformed sheep and get those poll numbers back up to respectability in order to oppress, point the finger at anyone who doesn't agree as un-American and un-Patriotic.

And what's truly sickening after his Address and why I can't watch, is the complicit corporate media, boot licking and being cheerleaders for Bush and this administrations continued lies.

but last night was the clincher - I KNEW that bastard was going to do it and was counting the connections as they came..

Glad you like - Hey EarlG - PM me an address and I'll send you a copy (two DVD set) of the Conyers Downing Street Minutes Hearing and Rally/interviews - I flew from Hawaii to DC to film it all to make sure that people could have what I consider one of the most historically important pieces of History of our time, it's a two DVD set..

I've been receiving donations for it at Takebackthemedia.com and donating back one quarter of the donations recieved at TBTM to the DU as Skinner allowed me to fund raise with it here..

Hell, send me the DU admin address so I can send a batch for all of you guys at admin, for you guys creating one of the great think tanks for progressives on the web.

And consider having a DU admin bash in Hawaii next time, I'll bring guitars and one of the best lead guitarists I've ever known (and Mai Tais) if you'll bring a bass - you can make a lot of noise here, they let you have FUN in Hawaii :)

(Here's some of the footage of Conyers and crew storming the White House gate, it's amazing.. http://web.takebackthemedia.com/geeklog/public_html/staticpages/index.php?page=2005061821444755 )

49. Thanks, it was a harrowing trip - 12 hours each way
and then altho I'd gotten the nod from everyone, once I showed up with the gear a Pelosi aid was telling me to go to the "overflow" room, and I said, "Hell no lady..I'm standing right here til I go in THAT ROOM.."

Then I spied Conyers himself coming out of another door from the Hearing room and strolling down a hallway - so I RAN down the hallway only to find it branched out (this is in the basement of the Capitol bldg - arched ceilings, all concrete) into three other halls!

I scanned each one quickly and then spied the Honorable Congressman by some elevators about 50 feet away, so I RAN to him (probably scared the crap out of him, but he was cool, he's a real man, you know them when you meet them :) ) -- and told him I'd flown from Hawaii, that I was there to document the TRUTH and not get footage to stab him in the back, that I was there to represent the "blogosphere" and get the word out, and I needed to get my camera into that room.."

He looked at me calmly and said, "No." (I was starting to flood my Depends when I realised he was messing with me, he's got a very droll humor, deeply intelligent)..

THen he directed his lovely middleaged Aid to take me down to the Hearing room and get me in there, and entered the elevator..

As we walked (me, Stephanie from the Judicial Office and a great lady, and Conyers aid) the ladies were going back and forth between them, "Why don't YOU talk to her (the Pelosi bouncer), you know her better..? With Stephanie saying, "Yeah, but you represent Congressman Conyers - I've already asked them to let the young man in..." back and forth, very funny stuff, like the "Mikey" commercial of years ago -- "Hey, I know, let's get MIKEY to Eat it!" :) --

So the aid lady walks up to the Pelosi bouncer and says, "Mr Conyers says that this man is to be in that hearing room with his camera - that it's not only a good idea, but it's the LAW.."

I almost started laughing at the situation (not at getting one over on the Pelosi bouncer, it was just the way she said, "..it's the LAW" that killed me..

Then I was in, but of course I was literally physically fighting with CSPAN and others in the MSM for my spot (tiny room) - and I mean for nearly 20 minutes of josteling, telling them to shut up, back off, etc while trying to get closer for the best view..

I mention that at the start of the hearing, that the view will be a bit messy at first on the DVD, but to hang in there as I forced my way into a great position and got 95% of the hearing with nice clean shots.. just so you know if you have the DVD coming - that part was where I was Literally trying to Take back the Media - my SPACE :)

They've asked me if I want to come back and film more of the functions in the future, and I told them I'd love to.. of course all of this will not be something that someone wants on a DVD -- unless I cover all of it for a few years up until the IMPEACHMENT, and THEN make a film about it from the start..

Now THAT is a movie *I* want to see :)

thanks!

33. From the same press conference ...
So what was Bush concerned about? The following is from the same press conference inwhich Bush said he was NOT concerned about Bin Laden (bold added):

I explain our concerns about a nation which is not conforming to agreements that it made in the past; a nation which has gassed her people in the past; a nation which has weapons of mass destruction and apparently is not afraid to use them.

<snip>

...but one thing I will not allow is a nation such as Iraq to threaten our very future by developing weapons of mass destruction. They've agreed not to have those weapons; they ought to conform to their agreement, comply with their agreement.

<snip>

I am deeply concerned about Iraq. And so should the American people be concerned about Iraq. And so should people who love freedom be concerned about Iraq.

For example: If we no longer are to believe that we went to war because Bush told us that WMD were everywhere to be found there and that the new, real reason is "we went to war to establish democracy"...

Then why did Bush have a "pre-emtive" war?

How do you have a "pre-emptive war" to establish democracy?;-)

How can we explain Chimp's lack of concern for the incarceration of Osama? They were in cahoots... I swear... the short-sighted fascist zombie brigade are so good at floundering..

FLIP FLOP... which is it?

50. I couldn't believe this one:
". . . we're probably not going to be able to bring Mr. bin Laden to justice...when you go to the very difficult question of dealing with sanctuaries in sovereign states, you're dealing with a problem of our sense of international obligation, fair play."

43. But the Bush Regime could never have...
imagined that Usama would allign himself up with al Zargawi, the one legged terrorist from Jordan, who had a camp in N. Iraq that the Bush Regime passed on bombing three times before the illegal Invasion. Now we find out that bombing was goin on illegaly months before the actual Invasion to soften up targets &/or to get Saddam to shoot down U.S/UK planes.

Folks we are living in a Twilight Zone and the Amerikan people have been duped so bad that their heads are spinning.

47. Zargawi, the man with nine lives and 6 legs..
who has died and been reborn several times.. seriously, if anyone recalls he had a sucking chest wound about a month ago, and then a week later MSM said he was DEAD..

NOW we are hearing his name being used in the Present tense everywhere - I wanted to SCREAM at CNN, "Hey, YOU reported the guy DEAD three weeks ago!! Ask them WHY they are talking like he's alive!"

I've been thinking lately that we should celebrate Zargawi's rising from the dead on Easter instead of Christ as Zargawi has Christ beat by three or four revivals.. and when did Christ grow a freaking brand new LEG, eh? The new pope should be putting Zargawi into the hat for Sainthood based on their own rules. :)

The actual terrorist camps were as you said in the NORTH of Iraq, where they refused to bomb while peppering and softening up the installations in Iraq before entry.

Don't know if people remember this but there were pre-emptive squads of both US and Brits INSIDE Iraq running around wrecking infrastructure that the planes couldn't get to..

Probably handing over bags of money to the generals so they wouldn't fight when the time came as well.. just like in Afghanistan, who were smarter and put up a battle to double their bribes..

But I really LOve what was posted above - if we invaded with WMD as a reason for PRE-EMPTIVE war and now we find out it was to install democracy at the point of a gun then Bush has ADMITTED to War Crimes in his speech last night.

This makes the DOwning Street Minutes all the more compelling legally..

I love the smell of NIXXON in the Morning :)

42. Joe Biden is a complete waste of air
Edited on Wed Jun-29-05 06:30 PM by mainer
Watching him on the News Hour tonight. He was asked: "Does the fact Bush linked the Iraq War to 9/11 bother you?"

Biden: "No, not really." (!!)

what the hell? He should have said "damn right it bothers me!"

Instead, he goes on to be a Bush apologist and he says that he "understands what Bush was trying to say, which is that Iraq is NOW about terrorism."

This man should NOT be the Democratic nominee in '08!!!

44.  And here are Scotty's words from today...
From whitehouse.gov

http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2005/06/20050629-4.html

MR. McCLELLAN: And who made any suggestion of a link to the attacks? What the President was talking about was that September 11th taught us important lessons.

Yeah, right.

48. Yeah, it taught us
how NOT to fight a war on terrorism. If anyone's learned anything from all of this, it's the Bush administration. And now that they've learned from the mistakes they've made, they're going to... um... keep on doing what they've been doing all along.

53. Bush's failures are not "old news". Rove's corporate media puppet will
continue to say "we should go forward from here and not look back".

We will stay on the DSM as it is at the root of Bush's Iraq failure.

55. He is going to be...
Known as a man who divided a country, yeah, our country. He is going to be known as the man who was President when the 9/11 attacks happen. HE is going to be known as the President who failed in Iraq, and wasted the lives or our military. He is going to be known as a damn fool, but again, the people who supported him, are going to be hanging their heads...for supporting this man, and not seeing the "true" self of this man...shame.

64. The rationale that we must fight the war on terrah "over there"
trys my patience.

Now why can't George take his war to say, Antarctica or somewhere where the majority of the population isn't 15 y.o. and younger?

65. Redemption and preemption
Diebold "SAVED" Bush's Ass, with another preemptive strike against our democracy...

America crossed the line with Bush's preemptive war policy! The same line that Hitler, Osama and Saddam had all crossed in the past. I remember the White House buzz words the day after 9/11... "If we change the way America works, then the terrorists have won!" Well don't look now Brother Bush, but America has gone from being the protector, to the invader! From the beacon of liberty to the torturer of women, children and old men.

Bush even wants to torture old folks and children in the US with his hard core budget cuts, so that he can reward people like Kenny Boy and Cheney with three HUGE corporate tax cuts! Draining the US treasury purely to benefit his Wealthy Contributors, during an all out "WAR ON TERROR", or any other kind of WAR, seems like a conspiracy to commit treason to me... Why does Bushco hate 98% of Americans?
