Blair says 'Downing Street memos' paint distorted picture

LONDON (AP) — British Prime Minister Tony Blair said Wednesday the "Downing Street memos'' paint a distorted picture, and he insisted that the Iraq war was not predetermined by the United States.

"People say the decision was already taken. The decision was not already taken,'' he said in an exclusive interview with The

Blair added he was "a bit astonished'' at the intensive U.S. media coverage about the leaked memos, which actually were leaked minutes of a July 23, 2002, meeting between Blair and top government officials at his Downing Street office.

....

In the interview, Blair said raising such concerns was a natural part of any examination of the cause for war.

"The trouble with having a political discussion on the basis of things that are leaked is that they are always taken right out of context. Everything else is omitted from the discussion and you end up focusing on a specific document,'' he said.

"It would be absolutely weird if, when the Iraq issue was on the agenda, you were not constantly raising issues, trying to work them out, get them in the right place,'' he said.

just trying to keep the ball rolling on DSM. One of the big counters was the authenticity of DSM, Blair is now officially confirming it's existence and contents....

3. First he says they didn't exist
Then he said they were false
Now they are indeed fact but not true
My guess is the next step will be that they are true.

11. No, he admitted they were real, but 'nothing new', right from the start
Mr Blair told BBC One's Breakfast with Frost the decision had not been taken at that point to attack Saddam Hussein.

"You have got to discuss everything as you go along, but the point is that after that meeting we decided to go back to the UN and give him a last chance.

"If the UN resolution had been adhered to by Saddam that would have been the end of it, despite the fact it was the most appalling regime."

Downing Street claims the document contains "nothing new".

6. He still thinks that going to the UN proves the memo irrelevent
when it's his own words in the memo saying "if we go to the UN, Saddam to not cooperate, and then we'll have the excuse we need to invade". How the hell does he think going to the UN proves he wasn't determined to go to war, come what may?

Just try it. Put those damning statements into a context that justifies your lies and your illegal war. You can't do it, can you, poodle?

15. They're painting a distorted picture NOW.
It was pretty clear back then. Anytime BushCo hammer at something, beware, it holds no good for the world and everything for BushCo.
