It's official: WH is a dog chasing it's own tail.
WASHINGTON — President Bush on Tuesday retooled his original argument for the Iraq war, justifying the U.S. military presence there as the solution to a problem that critics say the war itself caused.

More than two years ago, Bush argued that Saddam Hussein's control over Iraq could make the nation a haven for terrorists. But in his nationally televised speech, Bush asserted that the tumult that has followed Hussein's removal created the same threat.

4. CNN had a poll on the speech. Bush bombed by about 3 to 1..
They put up a different poll with questions that "pulled" for pro-Bush responses. The Chimp bombed again. Now they have a poll about Putin & a Superbowl ring or something.

Supposedly there was an overnight poll showing a 10% bump for the war, from 44 favorable to 54, but I haven't seen anything more of that.

I think last night will go down as the night Bush--well,--went down.

Very soon the Administration will have to put troops in OUR streets if they hope to maintain power. Owning the ballot boxes isn't gonna do much good when the peasants take to the barricades.

Honest to God--I think it's all over for them now. Right now.

Just like the aforementioned dog spins ever more rapidly in the fruitless pursuit of that masochistic/narcissistic goal, these people are swallowing their own shit so fast it's like an esophageal diarrhea tornado.

12. cynatnite, I read this this morning in my L.A. Times. It made my day.
In fact, I came into the office quoting that trenchant opening line by Ron Brownstein:

"President Bush on Tuesday retooled his original argument for the Iraq war, justifying the U.S. military presence there as the solution to a problem that critics say the war itself caused."

Thanks for bringing this to the DU.

16. Open letter to the "President"
Dear Mr. "President":

I see that Iraq is now a huge Petri dish created by you, a fertile breeding ground that allows for the infiltration and training of terrorists. Please entertain this suggestion:

Now, we've already had to bow and scrape to Red China to help with the N. Korea problem that you also, ahem, helped create by not disarming N. Korea of its nuclear WMD's when you had the chance (think it's any coincidence that right after we solicited China's help, N. Korea re-opened the possibility of returning to the six party talks?).

Has anyone in the Cabinet or the Joint Cheifs of Staff ever considered the possibility that we ask al Qaeda for their help in training the security forces? No, seriously, hear me out.

I mean, we have, between our own 135,000 people, another 25,000 Coalition forces and, what, 169,000+ "fully-trained" Iraqi security forces? That's about 330,000 fully-trained troops yet the terrorists are using the Coalition troops as cum rags. Since asking France and Germany to renew their offer to train security forces outside of Iraq, so they don't get killed before they even get their uniforms, is out of the question (considering how you ridiculed them for not getting involved in this clusterfuck), doesn't it make sense that we accept succor from the same people who are kicking our asses on a daily basis with poorer financing and a much smaller army?

Thank you for your time.

21. "...the facts were being fixed around policy."
This has been the case from the beginning of this ill-fated little war we have. The administration's feeling is, if we didn't find WMD"s we'll just feed the idiots another story and they'll believe it. These arrogant bastards believe we are such a nation of simpletons (and apparantly the 51% that voted for them are) that we'll believe anything they put forth. Look at Cheney's stupid comment about the insurgency being in it's "last throes." He just figures if he says that we'll accept it as gospel and not give it another thought. I think they dream up this stuff in an effort to convince themselves...and maybe they have. Remember that George Costanza line from Seinfeld? "Jerry, remember it's not a lie if you believe it." That pretty much describes this bloodthirsty bunch in their megalomaniacal pursuit of establishing freedom and democracy in the middle east by use of force.
