Couple Admits To Molesting Their Baby, Broadcasting Acts On Internet

Couple In Jail With Bail Set At $200,000 For Each

CENTER, Texas -- Authorities say an East Texas couple have admitted to molesting their 1-year-old son and broadcasting the sex acts on the Internet.

They also said Billy Don Latham and Ethel Latham allowed a stranger to sexually abuse the child.

The Center-area couple are both charged with aggravated sexual assault of a child. They're in the Shelby County Jail in Center with bail set at $200,000 for each.

Shelby County District Attorney Lynda Russell said the Lathams' home was visited by a police officer and a Child Protective Services worker tipped about the suspected abuse.

I was working for the Justice Dept. when I read Ghosts in the Nursery, and it explained so many of the research findings you see about repeat offenders and repeat victims, children who have the same PTSD that combat vets have, and so forth. Good work all around.

There are pockets of humanity where such things occur more than average, and pockets of humanity where such things occur less than average.

You're right that simply receiving news only gives us anecdotal information, nothing close to a controlled statistical study.

The subtler point I was making was that: very few people live in sufficient isolation that they cannot influence, or be influenced by, a community.

This couple was heavily using the Internet. Who were they talking to regularly? And who was talking to them regularly? I'm not inclined so far to think they simply posted their homemade child porn into a void, expecting zero feedback.

This couple also lived in a local community. Who were the people they regularly were in contact with?

I'll grant that it is remotely possible they pulled a total deception on every adult they ever bumped into, in the course of their day to day lives. But doing that requires such perfect self-discipline that I'm skeptical it was actually the case.
