OK, help me out here
A while back, I posted that my brother is getting out of the Navy. He found out in February, after coming back from his first deployment. Bells and whistles went off in my head immediately, and several people here thought I had every reason to worry. He did ROTC in high school, was battallion commander his senior year. He went to college, paid for by the Navy, and got his degree. Then, he went to nuke school and sub school, and then on to a sub. After the deployment, the captain told him that he didn't complete all necessary quals while deployed, and that there were serious concerns about his ability to lead. He was told that he would be receiving an honorable discharge, and has been working in an office on base ever since.

He called tonight to tell me that he's finally gotten his orders, and so he now knows when he'll be getting out. I reminded him, again, to be sure to resign his commission, so he didn't end up like the old guy I saw on 60 Minutes, sitting out in the desert on a tank. He tells me that he has to do two years Individual Active Reserve.

Does this mean that they could flip him to Army and send him to Iraq? He has talked of the Blue to Green program, trying to convert Navy personnel to Army, and said that this was presented as an option (not one he's the least bit interested in). He doesn't think he'll get called up, despite what I think. Of course, he was raised in a bubble, and thinks I'm wrong. Am I?

2. I really don't know the answer to that
A recruiter can answer it, though.

I'm leaning towards he won't be called up. I've heard of the Blue to Green program and I'm pretty sure it is voluntary.

I think he needs to get more answers to be sure.

3. Off the top of my head...

... if he has to do active reserve yet, he should not be resigning his commission. They could activate his reserve unit and he could end up serving the rest of his time on active duty as a swabby, and there's no end of the shit he could get as an enlisted ex-officer. Conceivably, every officer above him could ride him as a fuck-up.

Once he's completed his eight-year obligation (whatever combination of active duty, active reserve and inactive reserve that may be), that's then the time to resign his commission, not before.

On edit, as for the Blue to Green program, it's voluntary. They can't force him to do make that change. They can pressure him, but they can't arbitrarily reassign him to another service. His commission is in the Navy, period.

Cheers.
