Media TARGETS FOR THURS 30 JUN--from Downing Street Memo.Com

Thus our campaign: Every weekday in June, in cooperation with other activists and bloggers, we will publicize contact information for three distinct media outlets. We ask that you:

• Write a brief letter requesting the journalists to report on the Downing Street Memos, stating succinctly why you believe the leaked document is significant for the US.

• Send that letter as an email to each of the day’s three contacts.

• Return the next day and contact the next three targets of our media campaign.

TARGETS FOR THURSDAY, JUNE 30, 2005

1. Lewiston Sun-Journal, Executive Editor Rex Rhoades
email: rrhoades@sunjournal.com
phone: 207-784-5411, ext. 2104/2286

2. Portland Press Herald, Managing Editor Eric Conrad
email: econrad@pressherald.com
phone: 207-791-6317

3. (Augusta) Kennebec Journal and
(Waterville) The Morning Sentinel, Executive Editor David B. Offer
email: offer@centralmaine.com
phone: 207-621-5630

All the newspapers today are from Maine, whose Senator Olympia Snowe
serves on the Senate Intelligence Committee. Its stalled hearings on the manipulation of WMD intel need to be re-opened if we are to get to the bottom of the DSM story. One idea in targeting papers in Maine is to bring popular pressure to bear on Senator Snowe. It would help if your emails draw attention to how the WMD discussions in the British documents call out for investigation by the Senate.

The newpapers in Augusta and Waterville are published by the same news group. Neither of them, nor the Portland paper, has published any articles on DSM. The Lewiston Sun-Journal did publish one article way back on May 7, the excellent Knight Ridder piece by Warren Strobel. There is another excellent article from June18 by Strobel, which you might recommend to the Lewiston paper. Anyhow it would be advisable to urge all the newspapers to print some of the AP articles that analyze the documents, and the recent op-ed by Michael Smith from the LA Times. It is the best short summary of what is at issue, by the British reporter who originally published all the leaked documents.

Despite the memo’s disturbing and explosive revelations, there has been a virtual media blackout with some newspapers deliberately turning a blind eye to the Downing Street Memos. We hope you are already participating in the Awaken the Mainstreem Media campaign, and if you have time, contact other media outlets and ask them to do their job in reporting and investigating the information in the memo. Write a letter to the editor, call in to radio shows. It's time for the media to address real news.

Here is my personal-standar letter to the media:

SUBJ: Coverage of the Downing Street Minutes and the questionable use of intelligence

Dear ----------:

As you know, on May 1 of this year a document now commonly referred to as “The Downing Street Memo” was released into the British press. These minutes of a British cabinet meeting and several other recently released documents raise serious questions about how the administration was handling intelligence related to Iraq. At the very least, this documentation suggests that the Bush Administration was being disingenuous with the U.S. Congress and the American public on several gravely important issues.

The documentation strongly suggests that the Bush administration was determined to “fix intelligence” around a predetermined policy of war.

It is most disturbing that there has been little mention of any of these minutes of meetings between several senior British officials in much of the American media. Even more disturbing is the minimum coverage or discussion regarding strong, credible and independent evidence that the Bush Administration intentionally misled the U.S. Congress, the media and the American people.

I do hope you will provide more in-depth and serious investigative journalism into this matter.

Sincerely,

6. Thanks for your work. I have a question...
Any predominant views on the KnightRidder reporter in Baghdad being shot and killed?

We all know that KnightRidder has been on the most stories exposing BushInc and their lies about Iraq, and wonder what your group is thinking about this, yet another, coincidence.

7. actually I am just me..
And I have taken upon myself to support downingstreet.com ' s
work by doing the E-mails and posting the targets when they come out..

I really don't know what to make of the Knight-Ridder reporter's death. I don't want to believe it is on purpose..but nobody from Fox ever seem to get shot by accident..

8. Thanks. I'm fairly well known for NOT being a coincidence theorist.
Just hard to believe so many coincidences exist that all benefit the Bush family in some way.
