Quickly contact PFLAG, all local human rights groups, and all liberal groups locally. Get an expedited permit from the authorities, and then tell the media.

The media has limited news trucks, so staging your rally at another location is key. Don't let Phelps or his people get on camera under some twisted interpretation of "showing both sides of the story". He's an anti-social anomaly, not "the other side" of an intelligent debate.

I would get a few of my gay friends together, assuming you have some, and while he's protesting whatever insane shit he's on this week, have them make out as close to him as possible. Snap a few pictures, with him, the protesters and your friends in the shot and distribute to any and all supporters of his. If nothing else, it will invoke him to heighten his bullshit...

All of Phelps' kids are lawyers. Their protests are designed to provoke an angry response that make them look like the victim. They love to sue their attackers and either win judgments or settle for cash.

That's why I keep telling people to leave them alone. Do not counterprotest Phelps. Stage a pro-tolerance rally elsewhere.

Merely being physically present near a Phelps circus plays right into their hands. They have researched carefully how to provoke liberals into crossing the line. They have successfully done so many times.

Unless you personally have attained the patience and self-discipline equivalent to 20 years in a Buddhist monestary, you are probably more vulnerable to their goading than you may think.

And if you lose control even for a moment, you may wind up paying for Phelps' next venture to piss off his next prey.

Even if you do have great patience and discipline, your friends might not. I would never bring anyone to a Phelps event, simply because I don't want to take the chance of Phelps ever financially benefitting from him/her.
