1. You'd really have to have some great data
A E-3 in the Army may make only 17K a year but is food, lodging, clothing are basically paid for (and free travel to faraway destinations!) so to do a civilian comparison you'd have to make adjustments. Seems like some kind of study about this comes up every couple of years but I don't have a link at this time.

2. military pay scales.
It would be safe to assume that the lower ranks would be populated with HS grads, and the higher ones with college or longer terms of military service

In general, Enlisted ranks with by High School/GED Grads and Officers will have a 4 year degrees. JFK pretty much made it mandatory that officers have a college degree starting int he 60's.

Also since most enlisted come in straight out of high school you'd probably have to know their parent's economic status, not their own.

4. The DOD is required to keep that info
but I believe it was reclassified to confidential under a rider to the military care provisions of HIPAA. These deal with finding ways to allow rapid access to the medical records of deployed military personal's medical records in the case of combat injury while maintaining security and confidentiality; they have nothing to do with demographics.

Basically, the data was embarassing to the government so they found a way to hide it from FoIA.
