Diebold’s voting gear passes test
Thursday, September 25, 2003

GREEN — Maryland will make the largest purchase of electronic voting equipment ever, after state officials declared Diebold Elections Systems safe and secure.

State officials announced the purchase of up to $56 million in Diebold’s touch-screen equipment and service July 21, but backed off several days later, when a Johns Hopkins study by researcher Avi Rubin said the system had security flaws.

<snip>

Ehrlich said the independent review indicates “the Diebold machine and source code, if operated properly, can contribute to one the safest, most secure election systems available. Because of this report, Maryland voters will have one of the safest election environments in the nation.”

Eagon said the Maryland report should put to rest the furor created by the Rubin study. “We feel we have the best, the premium product on the market.”

Other Diebold officials said they were pleased to be moving on.

“Maryland has established a new standard of excellence for the electronic voting process,” said Thomas W. Swidarski, president of Diebold Election Systems, in a prepared statement. “Diebold Election Systems looks forward to supporting the state as it strives to be a leader in election reform in this country.”

HELP!!!!! I can't fight this bullshit alone.

You have to register, but there IS a way to make online comments that will appear in tomorrow's online edition.

Get you game face on and force this paper to report the TRUTH about Diebold!

3. Here's my first response.....
This article is filled with blatant lies. The SAIC report ACTUALLY says the following....

"This Risk Assessment has identified several high-risk vulnerabilities in the implementation of the managerial, operational, and technical controls for AccuVote-TS voting system. If these vulnerabilities are exploited, significant impact could occur on the accuracy, integrity, and availability of election results."

Perhaps if the Repository was less concerned with lying to prop up the hometown company and more interested in the truth, the story would have sounded less like a puff piece.

Nowhere does this article mention that the report says "The system, as implemented in policy, procedure, and technology, is at high risk of compromise.

Nowhere does it mention that Diebold REFUSES to allow a paper trail for checking results. Diebold ATMs give a paper receipt with EVERY transaction. WHY would they refuse to allow the opportunity to check for flawed results.

I'll tell you why...in the words of Wally O'Dell, CEO of Diebold - "I am committed to helping Ohio deliver its electoral votes to the President next year."

Think about that....the CEO of a company that makes voting machines promises to "deliver Ohio's electoral votes" to Bush.

Wake up. Your vote may not count, becuase Diebold doesn't want it to.

7. What they say vs what they mean
They say:

“the Diebold machine and source code, if operated properly, can contribute to one of the safest, most secure election systems available. Because of this report, Maryland voters will have one of the safest election environments in the nation.”

They mean:

“the Diebold machine and source code, if operated properly, can contribute to one of the safest, most secure election systems available. Because of this report, Maryland Republican voters will have one of the safest single-party election environments in the nation.”

10. Okay, added my comment even though I don't live in Ohio
My closing sentence basically said SAIC said Diebold failed the inspection, wonder why this story is wrongly reporting it passed.
