GIs in Iraq slowly becoming Frantic...
Edited on Thu Sep-25-03 09:12 AM by HOWLIN_WOLF
By Sgt. Leanne Duffy

I am a National Guardsman of the 105th Personnel Services Detatchment out of Lincoln, Neb. My unit and I are stationed in Kuwait at Camp Wolf. We were deployed Feb. 2. We arrived in Jordan in April and half of us were moved a week later to Kuwait to throw mail.

When our unit came back together in June we had an order to go home but it was revoked and we ended up replacing an active Army unit. When replacing the active Army unit we were told our date to go home was Dec. 1.

We now hear that we will be here a full year. We are under 3rd Personnel Command. They say that when they decide who stays and who goes, it's not by how long soldiers have been deployed, just by unit necessity.

<snip>

Yes, we are physically able to finish our mission, but mentally and spiritually we are dying.

<snip>

This isn't a simple board game of Axis and Allies, this is a game people are playing with real people - people with families, not robots. You have college students out here (like me) missing over a year of college to sit and get yanked around without explanation. It has been told to the Officers I have spoken to that 3rd PERSCOM refers to moving soldiers as "drug deals." You do this for me and I'll make sure your soldiers go home, etc.

<snip>

We are slowly becoming frantic. I hear people saying they are going to begin hurting themselves or others if they can't go home. The helplessness our soldiers are feeling is indescribable, it is past the point of "suck it up and drive on." We just want somewhere to drive on to.

9. why do you feel the need to candidate bash
on a thread that has nothing to do with the Democratic nomination?
I am so sick of this crap! What is your fucking problem?

Can't you , at the very least, confine your non sequiturs to places
where people who wish to avoid them can reasonably expect to do so?
Like a thread that has something to do with Clark? Or Dean, or Kerry, or whoever the candidate bashing flavor of the day is?

With any luck he is off somewhere off washing his hands again today.

It's like the freepers who turn every thread into a Bad-Clinton topic. "How did you like Seabiscuit?" "It was fine, but when CLINTON WAS PRESEDENT WE DIODN'T GT SUCH GREAT MOVIES!! (drool starts flying...)" (typos left in to make it seem more real..)

Just wait, soon a Star Trek poll in the Lounge will turn into candidate bashing...

14. This is no bash
I followed the link to his economic speech yesterday and read it right in the text of the speech.

That is the way it is and I don't care if it upsets you and shatters your illusion--THIS IS THE WAY IT IS!

23. followed the link?
The CommonDreams one to the article actually referenced in this thread? Or the one to the "Daily Weasel"? That's spin worthy of the Bush Administration!

2. Chimpy has created a pathetic situation.
Why are his approval ratings still so high... near 50%? Who the hell could be supporting this guy. He has ruined everything: jobs, environment, civil rights, international relations, budget, etc. Only the very rich have done well. Why do average sheeple like this guy?

5. If only the mainstream media...
would pick up no this it would surely start a whirlwind of torment for Rumsfeld and the rest of the Fascist pigs.
You would think the soldiers hometown newspaper would at least print it.

21. I have an even better one!!! "Bush won't be re-elected because the
nation is so immoral." So I guess lying, deceiving to kill thousands for corporate profit is moral :shrug: - and they wonder why I don't want any part of that brand of christianity.

7. And where are all..................
the "support our troops" folks that were on street corners, with signs backing our "prezeltdent" and the war now? All snuggled safely in their homes, bars, hunting camps etc. They don't give a damn about these poor souls in Iraq, they'd just rather wave the flag and dump on Democrats as being "treasonous".

8. Yeah - I wonder about that too
They had their signs, flags and yellow ribbons up when the war started but now they don't love and support the troops?

What denial these people live in.

This is gonna get ugly
I hear people saying they are going to begin hurting themselves or others if they can't go home.

Cases of soldiers turning thier rifles on thier unit are gonna start popping up soon if what he says is true, because, from what i can tell ,these soldiers dont have any hope.

15. How can any congressman
or elected official not pick up on this and make a stand? This is what we elect government officials to do - to find out what is going on and make a stand for what is right. There is no way anyone can tell me that the people in our government - Democrats, Republicans and Independants - don't know the real story. No way our government doesn't know the status of our troops and what the real situation is.

This is a worse nightmare than Viet Nam, because at least back in the '60's people could say that they didn't understand the nature of this kind of warfare. But with the lessons of Viet Nam, we have no excuse for allowing this savagry to even begin - let alone continue.

18. How can they not? Read for yourself:
On Sept. 14, I flew from Baghdad to Kuwait with Sgt. Trevor A. Blumberg from Dearborn, Mich. He was in a body bag. He'd been ambushed and killed that afternoon. Sitting in the cargo bay of a C 130E, I found myself wondering whether the news media were somehow complicit in his death.

16. When Johnny Comes Marching Home
The troops haven't started returning in big numbers yet. The Marines and the regular Army units who've already rotated were there for the glory part of it, so they're still high on it. The next wave of returnees will have a completely different story, a much more negative one.

It's bad news for Bush, too. These people will be telling their stories to local newspapers in small cities all over America. Some of them will say good things, but lots of them will bitterly denounce US policy.

19. Yep. And the timing of that return (middle of Bush election year)...
makes me worried that something will magically appear to either extend their tour of duty further - OR - force them into a 'patriotic' silence.

20. The second group who "bitterly denounce US policy" are the ones...
...that we will need talking to our kids in high school who all think going to war is just waving the flag, yelling rah, rah, USA, and lets go kill that motherfucker too. War is never that black or white. Its the grey areas that these kids never think about. And a lot of that is their parents fault too, because they should be old enough to know better.

22. If he voted GOP I have absolutely NO sympathy.
Military wants GOP leadership they gets to suffer. Like the song goes "You gots to suffa if you wants to sing the blues" On the other hand if he voted against this type of action then I hope the best for him and a quick safe trip home.
